Description He wants your brain.....

_______________
Link to reference drawing:
LINK

Materials used:
0.5 mechanical pencil, and a sheet of plain printer paper

No smudging used (I don't have one of those smudge stick things, so I just made a lot of really small lines for the shading )

Contrast added using PS7

I started this two weeks ago... but with homework and stuff I wasn't working on it much, so It probably took me about 4-6 hours..

I love his eyes! And you did an excellent job on the details! I was reading all the comments: if you haven't gone to the art store yet then I highly recommend it. Get a good set of pencils (I like Derwent pencils in the medium range) that have the H all the way to the 9B pencils for a good range of light to dark shading capabilities. And a vinyl eraser and a kneaded eraser are must haves. The smudge sticks are OK but I actually prefer to use kleenex. And the piece de resistance is Bristol Board. It is soooo smooth and a dream to work on.

Thank you! hmm.. cool, I'll definitely take that advice into account when I get around to going to an art store, lol. I've never used any different light dark art pencils before like the ones you mentioned, but I guess I might as well try it out.

You're very welcome! Oh, you'll love the different pencils. 9B is the softest and darkest.....VERY dark. And the H series are lighest and can do super fine detail work. You'll be addicted, I promise.

Thank you very much!
Your style seems pretty different from mine, but a good technique with hair I use, is to use your eraser a lot combined with a bunch of fine lines, the eraser really helps with depth and highlights while keeping a slight remnant of the strands of hair that were previously there.

beerfairy In reply to Algorithmic [2008-02-21 06:32:25 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I am starting to slowly get a hang of it. I don't really have a technique. I copy what I see. none of the drawings I have done were drawn form my imagination. I ALWAYS use a reference pic! so all I do is a bit of shading after I get the outlines done... and hair is more difficult than just plain shading, cuz of the texture, which is why I always had a hard time with it...

Wow, I don't really think I am qualified to give a critique of something so amazing.

It's beyond any I could ever fathom doing.

The only thing I can say is that I think the right nostril is a bit lop-sided....

Keep stuff like this up! It's truly amazing.

My deepest apologies on my delayed response to your thumbshare post. Life goes on outside of the DA world; sometimes more than I want it to...

No problem on the delay and thanks for the complements! Actually in real life his right nostril is higher than his left (weird I know )... Just click on the reference link in the comment to see the actual picture. Again, thanks for the complements

Is it wrong to find him so sexy? Even with the whole evil thing?

Well done, I especially like the depths you achieved with his eyes, though you might want to go in gently with a vinyl eraser and get some bright highlights in to gel with the background.

LOL.. I guess not?

Thanks , I don't think I have a vinyl eraser... all I really have is my silly .5mechanical pencil and pink eraser lol. I guess It's time for a trip to an art store.

Most definitely! I recommend getting a decent gum eraser and a white vinyl one. Staedtler graphite sticks are sweet candy too And charcoal. Purrrrr... Get some charcoal.

ah, that looks so good. the only thind i'd say that you should work on is putting a little more blakc in it, the peice is too grey, so you sould work on putting in some of "the darkest darks and the whitest whites" (as my art teacher puts it ) but i do the same thing, and you've got everything else down.

Thanks! yeah I know some areas should be darker and lighter, but it's hard when your only using one type of pencil. Thanks for commenting
