- Day 26: Luminescent -
353 word count

The polar bear was dying when Niv showed up. It was emaciated and barely breathing, crumpled where the waters were receding from the shore for low tide. It was lost, well and truly lost, and Niv felt a pressure in her chest. What should she do?

Step back.

The command was accompanied by a force field that pushed Niv from the fading creature. She yielded for something else that rushed free of the waves. It was another esk, bulky and sleek furred – the size of a whale! This esk was dark, but bold markings and a singular short horn distinguished it. A mass of energy emanating from this esk bowed Niv. Was this Makoa, the great Wanderer of the seas?

Makoa turned to look over his shoulder and Niv followed his gaze.

A white polar bear approached from down the shore. Twigs circled its face and something white and wispy flowed over its back.

Not a polar bear–

Aevre nodded to Makoa. I sensed it on the way in. Do you need my assistance?

A tittering and joyous sound flitted through Niv’s mind – it was Makoa’s laughter. As the massive esk bent over the polar bear Aevre turned her gaze on Niv.

What are you doing here?

Niv took an involuntary step back. I–

Go home.

What?

Aevre sat on the beach as other esk in the area faded into being to watch the polar bear’s transformation. Niv realized suddenly that this new esk would have others around it. Niv felt a twinge of jealousy.

Go home. Speak to Scamper. I know when you came into being. You left before you should have. Perhaps if you had waited you would be a traveler, not a trespasser.

Guilt chased in the jealousy and shock. Of course it was her own fault Niv had ended up like this. Niv felt she had brought everything on herself – for she was done blaming Scamper – and it was too late now even as Aevre issued her an order.

The anger welled up inside of Niv and she fled the site of the ongoing transformation into the frigid sea.

The best description of Makoa I've read so far, and I adore the image of his laughter, and the way that he emerges from the sea. So interesting that Niv is ordered away, and it really does feel within Aevre's character for her to behave like this, especially to a trespasser; strict, confident, appearing to know best.

I loved playing with that imagery for Makoa too! I really can't wait to write more about him. In my mind the Wanderers are trying to keep the potential new esk from feeling too crowded and they're also trying to help Niv with tough love. Aevre struck me as one that cared a lot to help but she's not soft or pliant in character.

Yes I completely agree! That was also my interpretation of her too. I can't believe I haven't had Murkhail interact with her yet, I really need to get on that! Perhaps Murkhail could meet her alongside Niv even!

Ooooo that could be a thing! I'm sure Murk will be back even after Niv flings him out of the boundary. Maybe Aevre will stumble on them arguing (and unknowingly causing a disturbance in the boundary either for the animals or humans) in the Antarctic circle. She could potentially facilitate them working together in that hypothetical situation we were playing with that forces them to work together (I think it was an oil spill and Murk and Niv were arguing on what action to prioritize to save the environment from the toxin).

Hahah yeah very likely, he wouldn't care about annoy Niv on purpose but if something came up he would certainly trespass again. That is a good idea, bringing Aevre in!
