Description
The Spanish Civil War officially began on July 17th, 1936 and would pit numerous tanks against each other. At the beginning of the war, the Spanish Army had ten Renault FTs in working condition distributed equally amongst two light tank regiments in Madrid (1st Light Tank Regiment) and Zaragoza (2nd Light Tank Regiment). The 1st Light Tank Regiment fell under the control of the Second Spanish Republic (Popular Front) while the 2nd Light Tank Regiment was integrated into the Nationalist Army (Nationalist Front). The fate of the TSF remains unknown. During the war France would sell the Popular Front 48 additional FTs. Meanwhile, Poland sold 16 Renault FTs through Soviet buyers intended to be received by Uruguay. They instead redirected the tanks to Republican forces. These tanks would fight alongside other imported tanks like the Soviet T-26 (Popular Front) and German Panzer I (Nationalist Front). The FTs would fight throughout the war and when the war was over, they were completely worn out. Four Spanish FTs survive today.Related content
