"Straying From the Herd"

Hatzegopteryx thambema, generic hadosaur. An acrylic painting of a juvenile European hadrosaur who strayed from his herd late at night, only to see a marauding Hatzegopteryx strolling by.

This was initially inspired by a meme I saw, poking fun at the dwarf Cretaceous dinosaurs of Hateq island when they fall into the sights of an adult Hatzegopteryx. I did intend for it to be set on Hateg island, with the juvenile hardosaur originally being an adult Telmatosaurus. I changed it to be somewhere on the European mainland at the time as a friend pointed out I had gotten the Hateg paleoflora wrong. Since it was too far along to change the background at that point, I changed the setting to the mainland.

I went with a more painterly style, inspired by a number of horror themed artists I like to get that atmospheric look. The reticulated pattern on the throat of the Hatzegopteryx was inspired by Liam Elward's reconstruction of the animal.

Completed on the 24th of April 2019.
