Description
« former page | back to the beginning!About this piece of the tutorial: I decided to combine these two because they were pretty short. I may do an entire tutorial on shading manes and tails. Coloring just takes experimentation to get the hang of. (:
So, this tutorial is huge. Definitely not for the faint of reading. It's extremely detailed or at least as extremely detailed as I can stand to be.
Sorry about the quality. ): Some detail was lost in saving.
Something I forgot to mention is that I use a pressure sensitive tablet which you may or may not absolutely need for the precision this technique requires. I have never tried it so I'm not sure, though.
It might be helpful for you to first take the same reference I used and try to 'copy' (not trace but try to reproduce) the example I have done here. It might help you learn. While it is not usually acceptable to copy other artist's work I give you full permission to do so with this tutorial- as long as, if you post it, you link back here.
Find any little errors, spelling mistakes or general unclearness? Let me know!

I usually do my shading in tones of colors depending on the color of the character/animal. Do you think your method would work well if all the shade layers were done in say...muted blue tones for a dapple grey?

I've never played with adding color to greyscale shading so I couldn't tell you! When I want to give my horses/animals a colored lighting effect I add the color to the base layer. But you could go for it and see? You can always desaturate the shading layers if adding the blue does not work out.
I think that's what you're talking about? I'm not quite sure?

Like, the entire shading being tones of a color so instead of having a greyscale you'd have a bluescale or a purplescale. I find having that colored shading really gives depth I think.
Also, how do you have the patience for pixel backgrounds like that? It seems so tedioius. I was going to make something, but of course I left my (faulty) tablet at home.

This tutorial helped me SO MUCH! I can finally get smoother shadows and nicer highlights. I can show you my finished product, if you'd like. (When it's finished, of course. Manes and tails are always my struggling point, so, you know....)

This tutorial makes me want to get back into pixel making... it's tedious but so worth it. (:
Incredible work! ♥

Thank you!
I find this method a little less tedious than pure pixeling.
Only a little though.
