Description Submitted work for my digital art class this year. Particularly loving this semester because the subject of this project was left entirely up to the individual student and not picked by the teacher (so you can imagine what I naturally went for right off the bat!).

Created and rendered in Photoshop CS6.

Awesome work.

Kinda reminds me of "1192. My last wish cannot be for a cage match between Cthulhu, Godzilla, Galactus and the Tarrasque." from Things Mr Welch isn't allowed to do in an RPG

That's one big cosmic brawl that I'd gladly pay to see.

Agreed. My money would be on Cthulhu (most magic power, fewest officially stated weaknesses), but I'd give both Godzilla (due to having the most experience of fighting stuff of the same size/power) and Galactus (due to being the smartest and most prepared) an outside chance. Despite being tough, I expect the Tarrasque would be the first to go down as most of its advantages are geared to fighting smaller opponents and the two main ways to finish it off for good, wish spells and getting it away from the planet, are within the abilities of Cthulhu and Galactus respectively.

It's just a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup (two great tastes that taste great together) of monster fight.

I've been growing a certain liking to Cthulhu and uh... by the way, Godzilla is my childhood hero.

Same here. I liked Cthulhu the instant I read the Lovecraft stories, but Godzilla has always been my hero ever since I comprehended movies. Other children's heroes were athletes, action stars, and cartoon characters. Mine was a gigantic, nuclear lizard with more anger issues than a soccer hooligan. You can imagine how that influenced my social skills growing up.

Hear, hear. Or 'read, read,' I suppose.

Oddly enough, I'm really digging this piece's backdrop & foreground-the churning waves, misty starscape & subtly warped architecture lend this clash no shortage of atmosphere. Cthulhu Itself seems properly baleful for an Elder Thing so rudely awakened, and again I find myself appreciating your utilitarian take on Godzilla (solid jaws, functionally-proportioned arms, etc.). Interesting take on the Dorsal Crackle(R) as well. Thanks yet again for sharing.

My wife loves Disturbed, but I never really listened to them (she would definitely know the song though). I was actually listening to Two Steps From Hell's 'Titan Dune' ([link] ) over and over again.

What's the whole story behind Cthulhu actually?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AndrewDeFelice In reply to Ninkom13 [2013-04-01 19:52:04 +0000 UTC]

Cthulhu is one of the Great Old Ones, a pantheon of ancient cosmic gods created by H.P. Lovecraft who are either sleeping, dead (and so powerful that they didn't notice), or on a completely different plane of existence from us. To come into even limited proximity with any of them is to invite complete and utter insanity. And the only reason they haven't terminated us in an instant is because most of them really don't even notice us.
I figured with Cthulhu being the most famous/infamous of them, it would be fun to have him fight an already belligerently insane monster like Godzilla.

Either way, this is another great piece of artwork! Glad to be looking at your illustrations again!

I think you have to be a fan of cosmic, forbidden horror to really appreciate Cthulhu and the rest of the Great Old Ones that HP Lovecraft so brilliantly described. If you ever get a chance, try to get a hold of some of his compilations. I think you might enjoy them.

ParadiseGardevoir In reply to AndrewDeFelice [2013-04-01 22:21:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, I've never really read any of the oldies, book-wise, though I have seen a copy of H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds" in one of my school's book orders. I know it's not the same, but is it worth buying?

AndrewDeFelice In reply to ParadiseGardevoir [2013-04-02 00:15:24 +0000 UTC]

I definitely encourage reading the classics like H.G. Wells's 'War of the Worlds', Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', anything by H.P. Lovecraft ('The Call of Cthulhu' and 'The Dunwich Horror' are particular favorites), the original Conan the Barbarian stories by R.E. Howard, etc. To me, they're definitely worth buying. But if you're not sure, you can probably get some of them from a local library (and even free e-books in some cases).

Hm, they all sound really good. I've heard great things about Bram Stoker's "Dracula", but I'll probably stick with "War of the Worlds" for now.

Cool. Love it--my favorite pairing. My cousin did an RP scenario for the Call of Cthulhu RPG with Godzilla as the object of a quest--only for the player-characters' ship to be hijacked by cultists and taken to R'lyeh. Where the only way to save the world was to lure in Godzilla to try to stop Cthulhu. I playtested it for him. Lot of cool stuff. This seems almost to perfectly illustrate the climax of the scenario.

Cthulhu is one of the Great Old Ones (extremely powerful and ancient extraterrestrials who are, for all intents and purposes, gods) introduced in the writings of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. Cthulhu is a particularly powerful and noteworthy being in the mythos, who presently sleeps in the dead city of R'lyeh on a remote, uncharted island (which I think is the cityscape in the background).

Cthulhu is said to be so immensely powerful and nightmarish that most humans who behold him personally are immediately driven completely insane, though he does have in his employ a secret cult of humans who work to revive him from his unending slumber.

Overall, Cthulhu is pretty much one of the few fictional characters that might actually be able to best Godzilla...

Ah, okay. I dunno about being able to beat Godzilla; I mean, plently of Godzilla's other foes were much more advanced and powerful than the Big G, and yet Godzilla still beat them. But, we'll just have to wait and see.
