Thank you, that'll be really helpful.. Say, would Paint.NET work for this?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ankaraven In reply to Bluejay96 [2012-03-18 20:52:03 +0000 UTC]

I am not sure, IΒ΄ve never used Paint.NET myself. As it seems to be mainly a photo editing software from what I have seen IΒ΄d say it should be possible but is not ideal for spriting. Personally I prefer the free edition of Graphics Gale for spriting.

Bluejay96 In reply to Ankaraven [2012-03-19 02:26:03 +0000 UTC]

Alrighty! Paint.NET is actually really decent, but I've heard Gimpshop's a lot better... I'll check it out, but the free version won't let you save GIFs... ;(

Ankaraven In reply to Bluejay96 [2012-03-29 21:39:49 +0000 UTC]

I know, to circumvent that I just take a screenshot of my sprite when I am done and paste it to a programm that allows me to remove the background and save it as a gif

When I first started spriting, everything I knew was from this tutorial ^^ you actually were the reason I started spriting... I saw your awesome sprites and I was like "I wanna be able to make those!" so I started practicing and I'm slowly getting there

AGuardianOfDreams [2011-04-09 23:42:23 +0000 UTC]

definitely not as easy as it looks. I wish I still had paint so I could actually do this.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ankaraven In reply to AGuardianOfDreams [2011-04-14 21:10:04 +0000 UTC]

Graphics Gale is in fact a lot more comfortable to use than Paint and it is free to download so you could still try (if you can download and install things on the computer you use of course)

emtracey [2010-02-28 04:12:10 +0000 UTC]

How long did it take for you to make this tutorial, pixel reference and the text? It's super impressive.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ankaraven In reply to emtracey [2010-03-05 22:18:31 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
The step-by-step example took about three hours...the different textures one or two hours (all together) and the text another hour...so about 6 or 7 hours all in all I think...

Thanks for the tutorial! It really helped out a bunch C: I might try pixel art now, but the textures look like they'd take a lot of time.. x:

Ankaraven In reply to Reimstar [2010-02-02 17:13:14 +0000 UTC]

Glad to hear that!
Yes, the textures do indeed take some time, a full sprite takes me about 3 hours to finish.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Reimstar In reply to Ankaraven [2010-02-03 21:22:26 +0000 UTC]

Woah o_o;... Do you ever make colors you use in shading/textures "from scratch" (as in, just picking a color that seems to fit from the color pool), or do you always use a color from the collection of shades you create beforehand?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ankaraven In reply to Reimstar [2010-02-03 22:26:13 +0000 UTC]

I donΒ΄t use colours "from scratch" usually...I sometimes add a shade to my "colour pool" afterwards if I feel I am missing a tone but generally I like to keep the number of colours used as small as possible ...randomly picking colours makes it difficult to check if I am using colours that are so close to each other they wonΒ΄t be discernible anyway and thus needlessly adding to the number of colours.

Owlluver [2009-12-23 06:24:01 +0000 UTC]

and are the programs you use free? and do you have to download them?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ankaraven In reply to Owlluver [2009-12-23 22:57:43 +0000 UTC]

MS Paint is a standard programm pre-installed on every computer using Windows as its operating system. Graphics Gale is a free program one can download from various sources. Those are the two programs I mainly use for spriting. I also use Photoshop for the basic sketches and for resizing...it has to be bought and is rather expensive but Gimp is a good alternative and can be downloaded for free.
