Ensign Hersch collapsed on her bed, the fogginess in her mind making it hard to concentrate. Another two of her crew mates had succumbed to the strange sickness that was taking over the ship and a part of her mind realized it was happening to her too. They were five days away from the nearest outpost even at maximum warp. If they couldn't figure out what was causing the epidemic there wouldn't be anyone left alive by the time they got back to civilization.

As she began to drift into unconsciousness a strange snake-like creature appeared to materialize at her side. Was it real, or just a figment of her illness? She couldn't tell. It's elongated eye slits seemed to regard her with a sinister gaze however and she fought to stay conscious, to reach out to it, but her body refused to comply ...
