Description
In 1946, the world is experimenting new changes on a global scale : after the fall of the Axis Powers and the end of WWII, the United Nations are created, replacing the former League of Nations in order to prevent on a better way any world war. 72 countries founded the new association of nations and are mainly represented by 6 powers : USA, UK, France, Soviet Union, Madagascar and Japan.
These 6 nations, as permanent members of the UN Security Council act like the policemen of the world, establishing order, peace and security in their areas of influence. The task for this new organization is enormous, due to the new trends around the world.
Question of the colonies
With the emergence of two non-Western powers possessing the atomic bomb and showing firmly their anticolonialism brought the European colonial powers into rethinking their link with their territories :
- United Kingdom rewarded India for its war effort by giving its independence and fearing a civil war opposing British people to 300 million people ; for their other colonies, they intend to « schedule » their independence or giving them an autonomy
- France had to cede territories to Madagascar and intend to give more autonomy and more rights to its colonial citizens, by banishing forced labour and giving them the same rights as French people
- Portugal, Belgium and Netherlands intend to « assimilate » their colonial populations to their way of life and to modernize their colonies in order to comfort them and to shut down any independence will
Question of racism
In a new world organization where Japan and Madagascar are able to give more weight to a camp and to another, USA and USSR are courting these two nations : national desegregation in USA (end of Black segregation in Southern USA and of Japanese segregation in the West Coast), support to anticolonial movements by USSR…
The pre-WW2 world was so centered on the question of the « race » and « ethnicity », that people (especially in America and Europe) are trying to reconsider their view on the question. Most of all, the realization of racism made politics trying to change public opinion about foreigners and discrimination : non-White people, principal target of discrimination, represent the majority of world population, and as the world is changing, Western powers must change.
A global civil war ongoing
After the end of WW2, many colonies (especially those invaded by Axis powers) realize that the European colonizer, believed to be invincible, was beaten, and that the occupation of their territory by another one is similar to the occupation of territories by the Axis. Realizing this parallel, people through the colonies are rebelling, rioting, demonstrating and most of all fighting : in Central Africa, in Indonesia, in Algeria or in Indochina, wars appear again but this time, not a war against another country, but a war against the colonial authority. This new wave of protestation around the globe are shaking European positions in their colonies, already weakened by the war.
