Top: Godzilla, before-and-after being exposed to the nuclear bomb that destroyed his original habitat and killed his family. He absorbed an enormous amount of radiation, from which he grew in size from 35 to 41 metres in height.

Before Godzilla got his atomic breath, he and his kind had the ability to spew highly pressurized water mixed w/ acidic fluids and bacteria from a special chamber in the lower mouth/jaw region. This was to indicate the health and strength of an individual, much like the manes of lions in modern day, and to show off to the females. It was also primarily used in combat w/ other Gojiradons (or other super species). After being blasted by the H-bomb, his acidic/bacteria-filled breath became contaminated with the high levels of radiation absorbed into his body. This lead to the creation of his atomic breath.

As for Kong, he is not the original that came from Skull Island or rampaged through New York in 1933, but rather a clone. He was created to be used as a weapon of the military against Godzilla. He was treated cruelly by his captors who’ve experimented on him since birth. It was this anger that fueled his strength when facing the king of the monsters: Godzilla.
