Question about the coloring: When are you doing the B/W layer and then putting on simi-flat colors and changing it to an overlay or color layer?

I use the overlay blending mode to add my colours (after adding an overall tone to the piece as well, adding blue to shadow mostly and yellow to the light)
I mainly do that because some colours require different values to be shown properly, like red being darker and such and with overlay I can also adjust the brightness as opposed to just hue and saturation with the colour layer.
After that I often do some colour balancing depending on the mood of the piece, light source etc, but that's after the normal colours are good enough, so later details.
