Description So here's how I made the hand for all those who asked.

And here's the finished product in motion

[link]

mistake caught! it's actually 52 eye bolts!

edit*

and for all those who will or have asked. It cost me under $50 Canadian to build. I don't know what it would cost in American as I don't live there, have the same stores, or really care. but you can just use google to convert the currency and give yourself a ballpark figure.

We made something similar to this in my science class in grade 4. also, elastics work instead of springs if need be, atleast they worked on mine Love it

SPECTACULAR. i've been planning a 'big' character costume build (scarlet spider version Venom, or Hulk) and i've been trying to find a really good way of doing the thumb...looks like you have it sorted!!! love it.

This is a seriously fantastic idea.
I have a few questions for you, could you answer them please? I just have an idea regarding making my own.
~ Could you tell me how heavy the completed hand is?
~ Do you think the palm would be able to support the fingers (specifically, the strain from moving the fingers) if some parts were to be carved to be thinner?
~ Would it be possible for the wooden hand to be closer to the real hand, or would that cause some trouble when moving the fingers?
~ And could I make my own, but drastically change the design? (out of the steampunk context)

aternox In reply to Lame-Ino-Girl [2011-03-20 05:43:55 +0000 UTC]

1 the most recent hand i made weighed in at about 5 lbs
2 it had thinner wood...i would say the thinner the wood, the harder the wood type you want to use (i.e. maple instead of pine) but it could go down to at least 1/2 inch in thickness
3 so long as there's room for your fingers to move, you can make it as close or far from your hand as you like
4 you can definitely make your own, however you like

I had an idea for something exactly like this! Had little time to really plan it out, it was going to be like the base model you have here but with a covering and costume combo for a L4D Tank. This will help a lot thanks for posting!

tin snips. they're thick scissor-looking cutters.

Just curious, is it possible for the hand to hold anything?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aternox In reply to E-M-O-Nex [2010-11-05 23:55:10 +0000 UTC]

with this alignment of the fingers, it's possible but difficult. However if you run all the fingers parallel I believe it is much easier to manipulate objects.
