So here's how I made the hand for all those who asked. And here's the finished product in motion
[link]
mistake caught! it's actually 52 eye bolts!
edit*
and for all those who will or have asked. It cost me under $50 Canadian to build. I don't know what it would cost in American as I don't live there, have the same stores, or really care. but you can just use google to convert the currency and give yourself a ballpark figure.

Thanks for the reply, appreciate it
I don't need it to manipulate an object, just to hold it without having to glue it onto the fingers. Maybe if I use steel cables instead of strings it would give the fingers enough strangth?

This is awesome, I was looking for something like this that included thumb movement, and here it is, I'm totally going to build this now.
where did you buy the springs, because I was going to try and build one of these with no tutorial but my main problem is when the hand relaxes

umm two things how would i make the finger bits out of a sheet of wood because i dont think any stores around me sell those type of bbq forks and even so unless i turn the spikes prong things into claw things for it i doubt i should waste money on it.....

aternox In reply to Split-Self [2010-10-04 02:33:19 +0000 UTC]
I'd go for dowling before sheets of wood. otherwise i'd get some pine and some carving chisels and shape them.

lol. ya i figured i mean buy a block of pine rather than a maple or hard wood as it will be easier and quicker to shape.

Depending on whether or not we already have the parts lying around, I'm guessing it'd probably be close to $50 American, maybe more if you aren't smart about the hinges.

My first one is almost complete, however the springs are not working at all. I think im gonig to end up using heavy duty rubber bands.

i'm pretty close to finishing my first hand (the proportional one). finger lengths range from about 6 inches to about 9. i cant give an accurate price overall though, seeing as i got much of the parts with my five finger discount. it also really depends on the materials you buy (i bought a five foot section of wood (1 1/4 inch thick rods), for $5. the bbq forks i found were about 2 each, so i saved money on that. not to mention, the long sticks gave me some spare wood in case a section or two splintered, which they did.

one last thing, i count 63 screws, assuming you use 2 for each side of the hinges, and 5 to connect the wrist-palm pieces
(12 for each finger, 8 for the thumb, 5 between wrist and palm, 2 for the glove)

just wondering, can we get some measurements and dimensions? i mean, for example, how long/wide are your fingers? and what type (number) springs did you get to cut in half? (they have specific numbers for specific kinds, the ones i thought would work were 78, but i didnt realize you cut them in half) obviously, mine doesnt have to be exactly like yours, but i like to know what works for other people.

it's just a basic walkthrough for the people that were curious how i did it, not working drawings. Definitely adjust to work for your own hands, my fingers are roughly 3/4" wide by 3" long. no idea what number the springs were

wait, is that each segment of each finger? because that would be one stubby finger if that was the whole thing. my robotic hand (in theory) will be close to double my normal hand (measured each segment of each finger, doubled it) so that the fingers would be proportional like a natural hand. might make a more unnatural/more robotic set of hands later, for example more blocky, not proportional, probably just going to do 2-3 fingers and a thumb instead of 4 and a thumb. but yeah, thanks again for the great walkthrough

they were 1/4 inch diameter and about 2 inches long before cutting them in half
