Description

UB 04 – Blade, given the name Kartana was discovered after an incident where radio tower on Ula’Ula island in Alola was downed in what at first seemed to be an act of vandalism. Investigators on the scene discovered the supporting Guy Wires anchoring the tower had been cut cleanly through, initially it was determined to be human action as no known Pokémon could have severed the cable so cleanly. Shortly after this event a trainer had their Pokémon admitted to the local Pokémon Center suffering grievous injuries, a Raticate with deep slashes marring its body, the Pokémon was in critical condition, requiring immediate surgery to treat its wounds. The trainer reported a small white Pokémon which they had encountered on Route 17 just south of Po Town, agents took his testimony and moved forward with the investigation into the encounter.

Upon its containment studies were conducted to learn as much as possible about this invasive Ultra Beast, the strangest of which came when the discovery was made in the fact that the creature was not fauna, but instead a species of motile flora. Its thin flat body contains filaments and tendons comprised of ultra-fine metals and when threatened its soft, paper-like arms stiffen into durable blades. The subject was given the name Noshi by one of the researchers, likening its appearance origami Noshi, a ceremonial form of origami used in Johto which are used to convey “good wishes” to the recipient. The creature appears to survive off of a more efficiently evolved photosynthesis than is present on our own world, allowing Kartana to remain highly mobile, and even maintain prolonged flight. What appears to be its mouth is more akin to sensory organs like our eyes and ears. The yellow pad located between the four mandibles appears to respond to infrared light and soundwaves and is capable of expanding and contracting similar to how our own eyes dilate to receive more or less stimuli.

Kartana appear to be passive and relatively content when compared to other discovered UBs, appearing not to lash out unless attacked first, leading our researchers to suggest the possibility that on its own world it is a domesticated species. A theory which would prove plausible after the discovery of the “Ultra Forest”. Drone scouts investigating a wormhole near the original sighting of Kartana found themselves in a beautifully maintained garden, with raked sand and stone placed decoratively in the area. Dotting the landscape were several dozen small trees, each bearing what appeared to be juvenile Kartana gestating like fruit on a branch. It appears that when Kartana reach reproductive maturity or specific unknown conditions are met, they burrow into the earth and begin a stationary life, producing future generations. With a single plant bearing dozens of Kartana with an unknown gestation period, it was decided upon to return the Kartana through the wormhole, as with no natural predators, they could likely overwhelm Ula’Ula island if they were to reproduce.

While observing the reproductive Kartana trees within the Ultra Forest, scouting drones discovered a uniquely colored variant of the Kartana, the main body of the creature appears to be a deep navy blue, and its golden coloration turned to a brilliant silver. It is unknown if this is a genetic mutation or a subspecies of Kartana, more research is required.
