Description Concept for two star trek uniforms.

The Pilot uniform is intended to be used by pilots flying my Firebat Interceptor: [link]

I got the inspiration to make a tactical marine-like uniform/armor after watching TNG episode "Chain of Command". In this episode, Picard, Worf and Dr. Crusher are sent on a secret tactical mission. While the episode is very good, one of its premises seems flawed to me. It seems very unlikely that any current navy or airforce ship captain and ship doctor would be sent on such a mission.

The script try's to justify it by conveniently making each member of the party a "specialist" in one required area of the mission, but the reality is they were sent because they are the lead characters in the show. This made me think: does the Fed have any type of Special Operations Force (similar to today's US Navy Seals, or UK's Special Air Service)?

Yes, they do have a Special Missions Unit. It is in the game called "Star Trek: Away Team."

There's a few things, the MACOs from Enterprise, references to ground troops in the Dominion War on Deep Space Nine, the Hazard Teams from the Voyager video games, but you already saw all that.

From what I understand, since Starfleet is meant to be as much an exploratory force as a military one, and for the most part that military is mostly meant for peacekeeping purposes, they don't tend to put a LOT of emphasis on soldiers, usually that comes up in extreme emergencies, like a galaxy-spanning war or being stranded in hostile territory thousands of lightyears away from any reinforcements.

im working on a series inspired by Star Trek, and one of my alien species is a gaseous, and metaphysical species, who have to wear motion suits to survive, would you mind if i used the suit on the left as an inspiration?

Love the uniforms. Hope similar ideas will be incorporated into future Star Trek stories.

There was a "Colonel" West in Star Trek 6, implying that he was from a service that had Marine ranks instead of Naval ranks. Star Trek Enterprise introduced the MACOs, a special forces group that operated similar to Marine Recon and had the same ranks. During the Dominion war story arc, multiple refrences were made to Ground Forces.

Starfleet really needs a Marine Corps. One that isn't just glorified security personnel. One that packs Phaser-Rifles, or something. Maybe using Power-Armor. I'm liking these concepts though, it seems to me that Star Trek doesn't have nearly the same variation in it's Uniforms that the modern military does (aside from color-coded Rate and rank), nor do they have all the necessary personnel and equipment.

(Off the top of my head I can think of only about ten different Rates present on the enterprise, which I can safely assume has, at least, the crew roster of a dozen USN Aircraft carriers, which would result in several hundred different Rates)

They have a Marine unit...it has never been brought into the light of a TV series, but was aluded to in DS9 with ground troop references

Acutally even though its not conidered Canon i believe that "Hazard Teams" fill the roll of special forces, please look into Star trek Elite force and Elite force 2, this is a mechanic of Star Trek that somtimes lacked as a normal away team in some situations was never enough.

Like the idea and execution. They have a mix of nowadays military style and the clean look of Star Trek to them

Dude, i wondered the exact same thing when I saw that episode. It just doesn't make sense to have the captain of the ship running around in a flashy uniform getting shot at.

I really like these concepts. It fills a niche that's been lacking in portrayals of Starfleet.

I agree with the posters above regarding the lack of realism in the portrayal of certain aspects of the Federation. While the themes of peaceful exploration, cooperation, and the value of diplomacy are vital to the vision of Star Trek, the fact remains that the Federation is surrounded by numerous hostile nations. Thats why I lean more towards the original series and the Star Fleet Battle portrayals of the Star Trek universe. The Federation is still peaceful and diplomatic, but it's not the automatic "good guy." It can be heavy handed and use its economic power and expansionist colonization efforts to squeeze resources out from the other empires, inviting conflict. It can be aggressive and can fail in upholding its ideals when it suits them. (The original series was full of episodes where the Federation blundered and violated the prime directive.) Mankind isn't perfect and is still very flawed, but it keeps trying.

Anyway, great artwork. I look forward to future art.

I like your concepts, like the Marine uniform alot. The first poster is right, the ST universe is making things too passive. Not everyone in the galaxy will be willing to even agree to talk or end a war like the Romulans,Klingons,Cardassians, etc. There has to be nastier things and races like the Borg,Breen,or Founders that all they know is to kill or conquer without remorse with out a secound thought that the Federation would need fighter pilots and marines.

Most things that try to make it realistic are non-canon. For example the is supposed to be a star fleet marine corp. But when shown in DS9 they look like glorified security personal. In the novels for covert ops star fleet has the crimson delta. Love the concepts wonderful idea to fill the gaps!

I personally think Star Trek is too pacifist and sacrifices realistic approach for drama. At most, youd think the security chief would be sent for missions requiring his presence, but the captain's presence is completely irreconcilable.
Very cool design on the marine's outfit. Would the fed "shroud" (as the Jem'Hadar named their camo tech) be based on holographics? If so, could one also wear the fed "flakjacket" as seen in a few episodes where fed "infantry" is seen. I'd imagine the personal shield is more like a "second skin" rather than a bubble around the trooper. Kinda like that DS9 game.

In star trek: the animated series, they had personal sheilds that could would protect the wearer from falling debris, weapon's fire, and even the vacuum of space. Too bad it hasn't been reused ::

So it protects from extreme pressure differentials too?
That would make a soldier wearing that system immune to high explosives (except perhaps for physical forces excerted on the shield itself)!
Indeed, things would be too easy if they'd all wear personal shields. Every episode needs at least one red shirt to go!

The issue of using personal shielding vs armor is an interesting one and handled differently in the different franchises. For example in KOTOR melee weapons became widely used with the introduction of effective shields against DEWs. But since shields are a military technology, the rules of a technological arms race apply (when someone makes better protective means, someone improves their offensive means or thinks of brand new ones).
One large minus in shields is power consumption and another is device reliability. If all you're wearing under the shield is a standard issue starfleet spandex, you'll be right screwed if the shield emitter runs out of juice or suffers from some kind of interference or some alphabet radiation (as often occurs in star trek).
Stargate Atlantis had a pretty nicely done personal shield concept, as it protected the wearer from everything except suffocation.

Shields are awesome, but in my body of fiction I'll place faith on armor. Personal shields are kinda useless against a certain mineral coating on projectiles.

I know this reply is a year late BUT: A.) Star Fleet needs marines - how can they fight wars and such with out them B.) they couldnt have a real cloaking device unless the treaty of....Charon i think.....was nullified as it would require a romulan observer to operate it.....but the way it looks like Atomik did it is probably a LOT closer to the way it would be done if Trek were to go to places -i- and others would want it to go.

Thanks for the comments. Your questions are intriguing, but frankly, I haven't given it enough thought to decipher how the camouflage and shield would work, and I lack the trek techno knowledge to even attempt it. So, let's just say that what you have proposed is indeed how they function
