Rambi is *zambi 's original character
she was nice enough to let me draw her and use her in a tutorial
( thank you stinklady -3:I )
well, I decided to create a tutorial on lineart separation
this should help everyone having trouble with their lineart,
and help those with a desire to understand advanced setup
sorry it's so very technical, and not very fun, but it's MUCH too important to overlook!
so enjoy ^^
//* EDIT
for those of you that know the Desaturation trick and want to use it instead for Step1, feel free. But there IS a difference between desaturating an image and converting it to grayscale. Look closely at this image ( [link] ), and you'll see that the grayscaled version is lighter than the desaturated version. What difference does this make? Hell if I know

I am not able to color my pencil lineart.
I didn't have any trouble in any of the steps except kind of during step 6. I didn't get a complete dancing line outline of my lineart after doing the step, instead I little dancng lines here and there on the face only. But even so I was able to do the next step.

I think this is just the kind of tutorial I needed since I'm tired of the old "Multiply" trick, which is convenient only if you want to keep all of your line art black.

Um this would help, but I don't have Photoshop. I have GIMP instead.
Would this work in GIMP?
But this could help...

Actually doing such things to the multiple line art isn't that hard. Once your base coloring is done (or if you want rainbow lines, just your line art) you can apply a 'lighten' frame above the line art or a 'screen' with the modifications, setting it to mask only on the one layer and not the subsequent ones bellow. Takes only a few seconds, so the whole 'I DARE you to try this...' is kinda unneeded.

Hey, thanks for this tutorial, it's really awesome. : D
I did this piece using your technique. I liked the way you explained everything. Very humorous and eeeeasy to understand. I can't count the number of times that I've tried out a photoshop tutorial [I'm a PS noob] and there were so many things that I didn't understand...tutorials for people who already knew what all the PS features were, I guess. Well, when I feel like laying down the time to try it out, I will.
But, seeing as even though multiply is limiting, it's very easy to pull off.
So...I'll try it later. Maybe.

=_= Sigh I've been trying to do this tutorial for over a year and I still can't get it to work. So if someone could help me I'd be so greatful.
- when I get step j it says that no pixels were selected, so I go to check the channels to see the lineart I pasted there. Well the channel I pasted it to is deselected and the lineart on that channel is gone ;_; *so frustrating* >_<

Ever since i learned about this, my digital art life has changed. That damn "multiply" option was decent, but this not only is better, but it "feels" much, much better!

zinemerald In reply to augustc4 [2007-07-20 02:38:55 +0000 UTC]
i got it working right after that lol.
But i still like multiply better, cause this way seems to be used for colouring on one layer?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
augustc4 In reply to zinemerald [2007-07-21 02:13:54 +0000 UTC]
actually, this way will enable you to color on multiple layers (like I'm sure you do), with the added benefit of coloring your lines (since they're on a layer of their own and a 100% black / opacity combo)

I added this to favs for more references, but I got lost on step G. =/ How do I move the alpha channel to "layers" ? Or the question I'm asking is How do I convert Channels into Layers? Zomg help plz? !!
And Nice tutorial. ^___^
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
augustc4 In reply to GrimmjowJaguarjack [2007-01-18 22:31:45 +0000 UTC]
In step G you're merely deleting your background layer.
In steps H, I, and J you'll load your channel information into a "selection", and copy that onto a layer via "Fill" in step K.
Hope that helps.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
GrimmjowJaguarjack In reply to augustc4 [2007-01-19 02:03:35 +0000 UTC]
It did. But on step G, I filled the layer with white. Then I couldn't delete it. And I don't know how to put the channel of the lineart into the layer.
