Rambi is *zambi 's original character
she was nice enough to let me draw her and use her in a tutorial
( thank you stinklady -3:I )
well, I decided to create a tutorial on lineart separation
this should help everyone having trouble with their lineart,
and help those with a desire to understand advanced setup
sorry it's so very technical, and not very fun, but it's MUCH too important to overlook!
so enjoy ^^
//* EDIT
for those of you that know the Desaturation trick and want to use it instead for Step1, feel free. But there IS a difference between desaturating an image and converting it to grayscale. Look closely at this image ( [link] ), and you'll see that the grayscaled version is lighter than the desaturated version. What difference does this make? Hell if I know

Thanks so much for sharing this technique, it is very generous! This will help me so much, and the part at the end about how it worked was interesting - only when understanding can you apply it to other things, and so on, I guess...

if you preserve transparency you can color the lines like you see at the end in 1b.

that was awesome. I read this a month ago but never really had any good line art to try it out. But i did it! After reading it like 20 or so times i did it in less that ten minutes!

Finally I find something that makes more sense with lineart clean up without making every single one of my drawings look soft. Thanks for even putting this out!

That is the best written tutorial I've ever read! You kept it from being dull, but it was very clear and easy to understand. And, at first I was saying, "Why not just put your lineart on multiply..." and you answered that question. XD I will keep this technique in mind for when I need to manipulate my lineart, but if I don't, I'll just use the multiply trick since it's quick and painless (although I spend hours meticulously cleaning my lineart).
Question: Does this method produce a cleaner lineart with less work? Cuz for the multiply trick, I simply adjust brightness and contrast and then manually erase things I don't like.

augustc4 In reply to nemisiscat [2006-03-27 15:21:09 +0000 UTC]
technically it's the same look with multipy. this is only to get the lineart separated properly. but like you, I use the levels, contrast, and all that to clean up too ^^

nemisiscat In reply to augustc4 [2006-03-28 03:53:47 +0000 UTC]
Ah, okei. Yeah, since multiply is easier and less time consuming, unless I have line color to change, I'll stick to the easy method. XD Yours isn't too hard either though. Just more time consuming. ^ ^

(weeell... there's also coloring..but that's another thing that I'll just have to overcome in my own time ><...)
But thank you SO much for putting this on here...you may not have come up with it, but YOU are the one who has shown it to me; and for that I am truly grateful!

WoW totally informative, I always did something similar with PS, always in the chanels panel. My prob now is i have switched into corel, my bro bought it for me for Xmas . I cant find a way to do this in COrel due to no channels panel, and yes i do have the full suite so nothing is missing. I dont soppose you have any clue how to do in COrel? Im stuck just doing multipy in main copyd object and it isnt exactly as crisp as using channels like your method here, crisp and beautiful. I miss it !

But now it worked! Thanks a lot for making this

Nice tutorial. Finally I can color the line art ^_^ .
But I've noticed one thing: when you fill the selection, the final result looks darker then the standard "multiply" method. That happens because what is grey in the channel, becomes black (near-black) in the layer.
Is there a solution for that?

popnicute In reply to oni-niubbo [2006-03-25 09:33:31 +0000 UTC]
you can try fill it with another color too instead of black ^^

Well I quickly went through this and it look very useful. I will devour this for use as soon as I have a spare moment.
I would like to Thank you firstly and let you know that I have this.
I always appreciate when someone with artistic skills like yours takes the time to help out the rest of the community with a tutorial that gives insight into what could have taken years of fumbling around to learn.
Some things just click after someone shows you in the tutorial format. Line art has been something that I have wanted to work on... I have never been happy with the way things have worked for me... I stumbled onto this tutorial quite by accident... a friend had a link back to some of your Line art and wel, afterl drifting onto your page I was immediately enamored with your work in the form of the Chinese Bamboo Girl... and who wouldn't be..... But after shaking off the initial drool factor and looking around.... I found the Heavy Lifting Tutorial.....
And that leads me back to this comment.
Thanks for the tutorial and the chance to learn at a more accelerated rate.... How to do the things I wish I were better at. I will need plenty of time to look around your gallery. Great stuff.
Wow... That was a seriously long winded way of saying "You Rock, Thanks!"

They were well deserved!
Great job and you are welcome.
I have been consuming as many Books and tutorials as I can to pick things up.... but a lot of times the books "Assume" you have a certain amount of knowledge That isn't always the case. So that is where Toots like this come in handy.
Taking the real experience of someone Doing it and showing the nuts and bolts it takes to get it done.
Thanks again.
