Rambi is *zambi 's original character
she was nice enough to let me draw her and use her in a tutorial
( thank you stinklady -3:I )
well, I decided to create a tutorial on lineart separation
this should help everyone having trouble with their lineart,
and help those with a desire to understand advanced setup
sorry it's so very technical, and not very fun, but it's MUCH too important to overlook!
so enjoy ^^
//* EDIT
for those of you that know the Desaturation trick and want to use it instead for Step1, feel free. But there IS a difference between desaturating an image and converting it to grayscale. Look closely at this image ( [link] ), and you'll see that the grayscaled version is lighter than the desaturated version. What difference does this make? Hell if I know

that's the gradient tool. the setting is... square I guess (best way to describe it), while the gradient itself is called rainbow or some nonsense (it's difficult to miss when you've got the gradient presets open) ^^
be sure to "preserve transparency" on your layer if you're going to do this! otherwise the entire image will be a rainbow XD

Wow, this is really great^^ I usually do the whole multiply thing, but this looks a ton better This SHOULD help me alot.... but, like you said, when you got to the Channel creating part, I kinda died inside; not because I got lost really, but I have Paintshop, and I don't thing Paintshop has Channeling besides split and other weird stuff I try to stay away from
Do you know anything about PaintshopPro9, and if it DOES have Channeling? If you do, you'd totally make my dayXD I've had to deal with so much crap from Paintshop, and as soon as I think I'm comfortable with it, it pulls some other cute stunt on me and throws me for a loop >.< Ya know, Ishould just stop complaining and buy Photoshop XD
But anyways, This is really good! Nice job^^

sorry but I know nothing about paintshop
but perhaps you could use masking? does it have that?
π: 0 β©: 1
ExiledChaos In reply to augustc4 [2006-01-11 01:08:19 +0000 UTC]
yes! I noticed the mask tool, in the layers option, but I never knew what it did, and don't think I ever tryed to figure it out O__O Is there still hope for me?!?
π: 0 β©: 1
augustc4 In reply to ExiledChaos [2006-01-11 01:14:18 +0000 UTC]
try copying your lineart with "copy" or ctrl+c, enter mask mode on a blank layer, then paste the into the layer mask with "paste" or ctrl+v. then exit mask mode and you should have a lineart selection that you can fill, or invert and fill.
I'm only guessing though, sorry

Whoa! Fun! 8D; Now I know how to make the lineart on it's own layer thingie instead of doing all this other stuff that I've done before.. xD Sounds kinda complicated, but I should be able to get a hang of it. 8D Hopefully. Just.. need practice!
Thanks for making the tutorial! :3 It helps a lot.

Are you ever up for collab? I'm saying this into the wind; I have an idea, but its about nowhere near physically starting yet.
Thanks for this, again. Fav so I don't lose it and because its an excellent piece of work.

Wow, what a brilliantly complicated method!
I normally just scan in black and white, duplicate the background and remove all the white to do my lines.
I'll give your method a try sometime. :3

I use PSP instead, and I just play aruond withthe threshold. It makes lines pretty dark, but there isn't any smudge or grime or anything *shrugs* It works for me lol

I have wanted to scan a picture and try doing this before, but I had not clue how. I am pretty new to photoshop and well, those kinds of programs in general. This will be of great help for me when I manage to draw a decent picture. Thank you for this great tutorial, much appreaciated.

So, I don't even use photoshop, and yet I still read this tutorial with interest and intriuge. That's how much I love your tutorials. If you know anything at all about paintshop pro, would you say this technique is similar to make a mask layer of your line art? The only thing that gets me with the mask layer, is that the line art has a tendency to get somewhat transparent....Because of this tutorial I may just scrap paintshop and try Photoshop....Oh dear.
π: 0 β©: 1
augustc4 In reply to First-Fantasy [2006-01-10 01:34:52 +0000 UTC]
I'm pretty sure photoshop is the industry standard, so scrapping paintshop isn't a bad idea. but I'm sure this trick can be done in it. I've never used paintshop, but maybe if you copy your lineart into memory, enter mask mode, and paste it, you might create a complex mask that can be made into a layer... I'm just guessing though .___________.'
