Rambi is *zambi 's original character
she was nice enough to let me draw her and use her in a tutorial
( thank you stinklady -3:I )
well, I decided to create a tutorial on lineart separation
this should help everyone having trouble with their lineart,
and help those with a desire to understand advanced setup
sorry it's so very technical, and not very fun, but it's MUCH too important to overlook!
so enjoy ^^
//* EDIT
for those of you that know the Desaturation trick and want to use it instead for Step1, feel free. But there IS a difference between desaturating an image and converting it to grayscale. Look closely at this image ( [link] ), and you'll see that the grayscaled version is lighter than the desaturated version. What difference does this make? Hell if I know

Nice - I think you can do much the same thing without channels - create a new layer, switch to quick-mask mode, paste the (black on white) lineart into the mask, go back to normal mode, invert selection, and fill with black. It's what I've been doing when I color lineart, but now I'll have to try the channel approach.
Thanks for sharing the know-how!

i just checked that method out a second ago,
did you notice that it creates a temporary channel named "quick mask" when you do it?
pretty cool

I've never noticed that - but it makes sense. It's like converting the image to HSV space, then copying the V (value/intensity) channel into an alpha (mask) channel and using that for the fill. I figured ps is using channels behind the scenes, but I never use the channel palette so I never thought to look there!

awesome technique!
photoshop has so many ways to do things doesn't it?
(thanks in return for explaining your own methods)

Yeah - I've been using ps for years and only just (last few days!) got around to using some of the tools for the first time! Still haven't used some of them at all. Lets not even talk about the filters..

Oddly enough, this is one of those methods I've known of for years, but have never perfected. I always get to "Make a channel" and get stuck there. After not being able to remember the next step, I just use color overlay layers to try and change my lineart... and trust me, it doesn't work as well
I always wished there was one more step that would allow one to make the linework into vectors, lol. But that's what Adobe Streamline is for. Anywho, very timely, I was thinking about testing colored outlines out on my next pic (if I don't finish it in pencil) and this makes that so much easier.
Now to go back and look at your latest "I draw fine chicks!" explotation, lol... (also know as "your other new work")

I'd say "It's the only thing Photoshop Lacks!", But then Adobe would tell me "So that's why you buy Illustrator!"

Ah, the Rambi plauge spreads! Good good. (evil hand wringing) So so, Another tutorial. I've actually had people TRY and tell me to do this, but they simply say things like, "oh, jus tuse channels." and leave it at that. which is... useless. You make some good tutorials August, been learning by leaps and bounds from them. ( at least *I* think I have) so, Thanks

nadienne In reply to augustc4 [2006-01-10 04:01:56 +0000 UTC]
hmm... now, gimmie a moment... this was a while back now, and i was messing around...
i made a layer-copy of the lines, then i made a new layer on top and filled it with a diagonal gradiant... then, i believe i did a layer effect... soft light mebbe... not multiply, though... it was too dark for the image so i changed the layer opacity...
i should really open up the image and take a gander at it... if i've not thrown away the psd file... it's so very simple to do in ps7, but i have pscs2, so it's like reteaching myself how to do things differently-newly...

hahahahahahaha.... >.> if I didn't already do this stuff I'd be a fangirl all over you. XDDDDDD I just need to learn to uh.... use my pen better and make neater lines.... *ends up with squiggles and incredibly thick lines all the time* But it was a good tutorial! The one I learned this from was uh.... well it took me hours to understand... had this been around about a year ago, I would've been the happiest kid on the block. lol

Oooo, you do this already?! so few people know the trick
when my friend told me, she couldn't even explain it right XD
luckily I knew enough to where all she had to say was "channels"
then I was like "DUH!!!! I'M SO STUPID!"

This is an amazing tutorial! Probably the easiest-to-understand-tutorial I have ever read. I love how you explained (and showed) exactly what to click and what it does, instead of just assuming like everyone knows already (I know I don't) . So, thank you!! I'll be sure to use this in the near future. ^.^

whoa thats wayy more complicated then how i do things then then i skip the scanning and draw on the comp. i always forget to draw on a transparent layer lol. so i go to channels and click the circle button then go to selection and inverse it.. new layer and fill black.. then clear drawing on background layer O_O nice tutorial!! and cute lil rambi teehee
