Description
I doodled these as I watched the movie after a two-month hiatus from the DVD. I wanted to try and capture more of the original style, so I did some quick doodles at different angles that I caught Hiccup looking adorable at. Of course, I couldn't quite escape my own style, whatever that may be, and then I kind of made my own poses... so it's really a melding of styles AND poses. The colored one is my honest attempt at an older cannon-Hiccup. Just maybe two or three years after the movie. Well, I tried.

Love the colouring job on the bottom Hiccup. The skin tone looks wonderful! It has a kind of emotion I really like.
I also love how you've managed to smush both styles into one picture. It looks remarkably accurate to the dreamworks style but it has the nose that I often associate with your art. Because really, whenever I peruse through the art alerts from httyd fanrats group, I always can tell your art from someone elses because of the noses.

Oh thanks! It makes me so happy to hear you think I've captured the Dreamworks style, it was exactly what I was going for. I really did want the colored Hiccup to look like a viable, older Hiccup.
That's interesting that I have characteristic noses

I think the top one is the best mesh of movie Hiccup + AK-style.
I'm glad your mom got to watch it. LOL, you should have made your family watch it at Easter, I wonder if Uncle John would have liked it

Then the top one is my greatest failure!
My mom only saw the very end. She and my dad came in, drunk, just as Hiccup killed the Green Death. And they both sat on either side of me, and my dad was hiccuping away in my left ear, and my mom kept making annoying cat noises in my right. I told them both to shut up, but then my dad started laughing uproariously during the part where they thought Hiccup was dead... it was a mess.
I've vowed to make my mom see it from the beginning.
U. John would have left in the very first scene because his blazed mind couldn't have handled it.

Hola. Nice work. I am glad you shift between the canon Hiccup and your Hitchups Hiccup.
I am rather glad your own style comes through. I tend to prefer those drawings that show original interpretations of characters, and your style catches his emotions so well. Plus you have that advantage of sharing similar physical features with Hiccup with the general facial shape, eye and hair color.
It was nice to see this

Yes, I do like to still stay connected to the actual movie. Gotta stay true to his roots, yo. Glad you like it!
Looking like Hiccup always helps with the coloring part

I like how all 3 drawings are different ages: The far left looks very young, and the other two have a 'growth' to them, especially the colored one.
I liked also how big the resolution is, I could really focus in on the little details, particularly the colored drawing - his eyes, the freckles....this is honestly the best drawing(s) I've seen from you thus far: everything just sticks out without being too much, and I love the overall "sandy-ness": it's neither bland, or too vibrant. The hair-color though....It's been a long time since i've seen the movie myself, but wasn't it red? or chestnut/redish-brown?
Li Shang? Hah, I suddenly have this image of Astrid as Shang, Toothless as Mushu, and Hiccup as "Ping"...though I can't imagine Hiccup ever dressing up as a woman XD.

Thanks a bunch! I guess the far left does look the most accurate to the movie-aged Hiccup. The middle one was supposed to be another movie-aged depiction, but I suppose my own style keeps leaning towards older. But it's cool there's at least a progression seen in there.
His hair color was actually less red than how I have it. Actually, the movie!Hiccup had very little red at all! We hear about him with red hair a lot because of the books, where he has red hair, and I think fannon-cannon has turned him into having 'auburn' hair. Like a nice mixture of the two. I had to keep changing the hue of it to get it right, but I don't think I could have resisted a little bit of red in there.
For some strange reason, I can picture Hiccup in a dress

From what I understand: auburn is leaning more toward the brown, in between brown and red, and chestnut is leaning toward red, in between brown and red. The overall "sandy-ness" of this picture, which I love, may also be what is making his hair look like this, and not something you actually did.
Probably over-thinking it; personally, I love people with red/brown mixture, so I probably couldn't resist making his hair look like that just for the fun of it, even if it was inaccurate XD.
At any rate though, you are definitely I feel getting better with colors .
The thing is, why? It's not like he would have to disguise himself since the majority of his class is male....still, it would be funny to see someone try a fanfiction with this idea XD.

Ooo, you think I'm getting better with colors?! This was my first attempt at coloring ever. I'd like to think I've come a ways since then, but it's great to hear feedback from others
That "sandy-ness" is a paper texture I overlapped to give the sketch some character, something I learned from *ch4rms , who's really taught me a lot in the coloring words.
I have no idea what's wrong with my mind. I think it's just too easy picturing Hiccup in a kimono, using a sash to shimmy up one of those giant torch posts

Wow, I never saw that drawing before, it's very very good as well What I love about your art style, is how gritty it is. You make everything pop out in a certain way that feels down-to-earth and not gaudy: you don't abuse or go crazy with your colors and usually stick with a few (like in this one, their aren't many colors and brown feels like the main choice).
Like in that drawing you just showed me - I really REALLY feel Hiccup's pain: all the wounds just pop out at me and it kind of goes well with your love of realism. It's not plain so much as it's simple and minimalist and I like that. Messages like "more is less" or "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" come to mind when I see your art.
In general, once you find a style that you like and you work best with, keep at it: develop your strengths. Experimenting and mix and matching is fun and all, but once you find what you're good at, it's only best, and natural, to keep going that way .

Haha, that was a doodle before I had the tablet, long ago, back when I only had scrap paper and pencils to express my love for this fandom.
"Less is more" is a term I throw at my assistant all summer when she tries to over-frost the cake. Every. Time.
Thanks for all that I do feel like I'm finally coming into a set style.

Is it just me, or is that the theme for the week or something...your drawing, your chapter, our conversations lately...they keep seeming to be about this one topic XD.
A very thought-provoking and interesting one, but still...XD.
I enjoyed Grody by the way; he made me think of Gobber eyeing and feeling up Valhal...you sure he isn't his long-lost son or something?
