Some people think the movie took place with the characters ages 17/18. I, personally, don't - they don't look it and they don't act it. However, I just watched a video on the Arena Spectacular where the story is slightly tweaked from what I can see in the clips with some of the interactions. The actors of Hiccup and Astrid are 18 and 19 respectively (and behave more like that age) so I wanted to try and draw the dock scene with the characters at that age...physically.I don't know why...but I always make Astrid's shoulder pads with ludicrously sharp spikes. Blonde jokes, anyone?

See, I also like to put them at my age... eventually. When I work with them in fics, I always tend to move the stories to a time/age I can relate better to the characters and give them a more believable line of thinking.

Makes perfect sense. It can be hard for older writers to get back into the mindset of being a teenager, it's easier to apply what you know from experience.

I actually had Hiccup about 17 in my fic but that wa sbecasue I read the offical movie novel and one of the lines refering to hiccup was "Worst viking for the past 17 years"

That was from one of the earlier scripts they had. Originally they were going to stick closer to book ages (10/11), then they were going to go for older (17/18) and they finally decided to settle somewhere in the middle. I think they did that so they could make future movies that showed growth, physical and emotional
In the directors comments they alluded to Hiccup being 14, though even before I listened to those I had Hiccup as around 15 in my fic.

ah Actually atfe rthe movie came out the lead productiond esigner Kathi Alteri came to talk to my school's animation club and I did ask how old Hiccup was she said between 15 and 17 and she even showed us the old story boards and gave the pitcjh which had us all in stitches.
my school's animation club Shrunken Headman has a special deal wth Dreamworks when they comeout with a new movie we get to see a free advanced screening at the IMAX.

I think it's funny that even Kathi didn't have a straight answer for his age, even the producers are confused! It was one of the men who mentioned putting himself in Hiccup's position as a 14-year-old, so I would safely assume they pegged Hiccup closer to the 15 age mark. Astrid and them did seem a bit older, particularly Snotlout or the twins, they could have been creeping up on seventeen. I would say the physical difference between the adults and, not just hiccup, but the kids in general, betrays their youth.

Haha, yeah, I think that will be the reaction of most fans if Dreamworks decides to announce with the next movie that Hiccup was meant to be 17. I mean, for anyone who sits and watches the movie without any expectations most will assume the teens are between 14-16. I've even heard some think they're as young as 12! (which I think is about as wild a stretch as saying they're 18).

LOL yeah I think I might go back to my fics (when homework allows me to) and edit them so Hiccup is about 15 or 16 instead. I do think he was most likely in his mid teens.

I put them at 14/15 depending on the character. Plus, I watched the director's comments version where the director was explaining Hiccup's behavior and used the phrasing "If I were a 14 year old boy..."
So that was a pretty good deciding factor for their ages.

Why you nervous? He's just like any other human on your planet. So what makes him special?
A lawyer and a blonde are sitting next to each other on a long flight from LA to NY. The lawyer leans over to her and asks if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde just wants to take a nap, so she politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists and explains that the game is really easy and a lot of fun. He explains" I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5, and vice-versa." Again, she politely declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now somewhat agitated, says, "Okay, if you don't know the answer you pay me $5, and if I don't know the answer, I will pay you $500!." Figuring that since she is a blonde that he will easily win the match. This catches the blonde's attention and, figuring that there will be no end to this torment unless she plays, agrees to the game.
The lawyer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the earth to the moon?" The blonde doesn't say a word, reaches in to her purse, pulls out a five dollar bill and hands it to the lawyer. Now, it's the blonde's turn. She asks the lawyer: "What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down with four?"
The lawyer looks at her with a puzzled look. He takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references. He taps into the Airphone with his modem and searches the Net and the Library of Congress. Frustrated, he sends E-mails to all his coworkers and friends he knows. All to no avail. After over an hour, he wakes the blonde and hands her $500. The blonde politely takes the $500 and turns away to get back to sleep.
The lawyer, who is more than a little miffed, wakes the blonde and asks, "Well, so what IS the answer!?" Without a word, the blonde reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5, and goes back to sleep.
