He also brutally murdered those who spoke out against him and mounted their heads on likes as an example for all to see XD You can be a relatable human being but still be an evil villain.

Yes. Those things was pretty horrible, but Romania still hailed the man as a national hero in his wars against the Ottomans and for his time as Voivode of Wallachia. So...most see him as a just ruler and a realistic tyrant who punished criminals and executed unpatriotic boyars to strengthen the central government and one of the greatest Romanian rulers.
Heck, even the worst of his actions are seen as rational acts serving national interest.

Yeah but if we judged hospital figures solely based on how their own people viewed them then all those slave-owning Confederate jerks would be heralded as heroes to and I think most of us can agree that they aren't exactly the most praise-worthy people XD

There a BIG different between Vlad and the CSA. Vlad was fighting for both his people's freedom against Ottoman Muslims, and all of Christian Europe. While the South trying to keep slaves.

Well there's the parallel though. Vlad was fighting for one specific group of people and demonized the others while he himself behaved in cruel and demonic ways with torture and tyranny. Just like the Confederate rebels were fighting for the "freedom" of white Southerners while in reality they were just a bunch of cruel rednecks XD

The Ottomans did stopped the Renaissance from reaching the region under its control and was a dark oppressor that didn't allow people to be educated in their own language and limited the rights of religious minorities.
Vlad's victories over the invading Ottomans were celebrated throughout Wallachia, Transylvania and the rest of Europe — even Pope Pius II was impressed. Vlad was fighting for ALL of Christian Europe against the Ottoman Warcry and Muslin Invasion and control.
Vlad was a just, but very harsh ruler.

It seems we run into the 1812 Canadian situation again XD Both sides did sucky things, but one was arguably less sucky than the other. Especially when Sulieman rolled around and issued in a lot of reforms that Christian Europe would never allow. I imagine the people that got their heads put on spiked weren't the biggest fans of Vlad's "greater good" philosophy XD

Most of them had it coming. The boyars was screwing Wallachia, helping the Ottomans, and the ones who killed his father and brother. The Transylvanian Saxons were allied with the nobility (boyars) of Wallachia, thereby making them Vlad's enemies. The rest was Ottomans used as a form of psychological warfare. And it work. The Ottomans ran for the hills then face Vlad.
Hell, The OTTOMANS impaled people first. Where do you think learn the trick? He was again kidnapped by the Ottoman Empire and he was taught about science, philosophy, and the skills of a warrior in that time.
His own other brother, Radu cel Frumos, backstab him, and was put on the Wallachian throne by the Ottomans, and converted to Islam. HE was the traitor to his own people and faith and family. Not Vlad.

Vlad also had the turbans nailed to the heads of any Ottoman civilians after the Sultan refused to deny them that right 23000 Ottomans impaled on pikes along with anyone who opposed Vlad. The country was torn apart by civil war. A lot of people saw the Ottomans as an escape from all the political corruption in their land. I remember John Green saying in a Crash Course video "hey nomadic invaders come on in! You seem better than the last guy!" XD
I'm not saying the Ottomans were perfect, but that doesn't mean Vlad wasn't a terrible person. I mean you don't earn the titles of "Impaler" and "Son of the Devil" for no reason XD
