Description [UPDATE: You need to Download the tutorial in order to view it. Previously DA allowed thumbnails for picture items. That changed in later years.)

Because the title bar only allows so many characters...

First off. This is my first tutorial ever.
2nd - I didn't realize until I was close to finishing the tutorial, that Silver's other quill just looks too out of place.
But for the sake of the tutorial itself... I didn't change that. That change will be made in Part 2.

It's damn wordy. I advise you read it through first before putting it to use. I tried to make it as easy to understand as possible. So those that are super-advanced in Photoshop CS or higher...don't bug me.

For those that do use this tutorial at all or find it useful, please by all means fave it.

If you have any recommendations on how future tutorials can be set up, please give me the advise. I need all the help I can get.

My fingers are almost frozen...and I'm going to bed.

You're using the pen tool to make the shape of the line. You make a complete shape, and tell it to fill in.

oh ok but i meant how come there are two lines coming out of the start line (on silver's hair for example)

BlazeTBW In reply to TheGoku7729 [2016-04-03 03:36:33 +0000 UTC]

It's actually not two lines, but one entire shape. However the lines coming form each dot are the arms that put a curve on the dot. They were all highlighted/selected to show what the arms look like when they have a curve on them.

However, there's a chance that you may be getting one arm because the shape is not completely closed.

In the idea of having just a single line, two dots connected by one line, neither dot will have two arms. When using the "Convert Point Tool", those two dots will only have one arm each because Photoshop sees it as one line and not a shape.

Continuing that example, if you were to add a 3rd point in that line, the middle point would have two arms to adjust the curve. This is because the middle dot is connecting to the two outer dots, and modifying the two lines at once.

Hope that helps.

These people who say "Where is it? All I see is a thumbnail!?" are really annoying. Can't it hurt them to read the description?

Anyways, I loved this tutorial. One of the best on here

It doesn't bug me so much any more (since it's farther and fewer between when someone actually comments on this anymore lol).

So long as it keeps helpin' out (even after all these years) I'm happy~ Glad ya liked it!

Click "Download Image" on the upper right hand side.

Before hand the image above was just a thumbnail when DA allowed for them on pictures. Later on that changed, but the tutorial's still there.

Nice and simple loved it! ........ Pen tool..... i knew it! XD there's a way to make it in Paint Tool SAI, a faster way, tho you'll have to, eventually, fix it with Photoshop's Pen tool
I'd rather work with Pen tool all the way!

Either Photoshop 4 or Photoshop Elements (any) most likely won't have the pentool. Sorry.

sonicgirl018 In reply to BlazeTBW [2010-10-04 18:02:24 +0000 UTC]

Well,I've got hpotoshop elements.5 so yeah. But could the lasso tool work to?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlazeTBW In reply to sonicgirl018 [2010-10-04 19:43:35 +0000 UTC]

It can work- but it will only be as smooth as your hand. I recommend the Polygonal Lasso Tool.

You can be a bit more precise and clean it up easier with the eraser.

It could- but having never used GIMP before, it'll most likely not be exactly the same.

lol, you have no idea how excited I was once I made the first line. I'm pretty new to using the pen tool, and I found another SA style tutorial, but this way of doing lineart is pretty much easier than the other, lol.

Totally helped me. Thanks for posting up this tutorial.

When you say reference, what do you mean? (Not the dictionary definition, but as a reference for what?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

riodile In reply to BlazeTBW [2010-08-17 04:12:12 +0000 UTC]

for one of my OC.
Actually the character i'm planning to make has power to control water so i'm thinking about dog because most of them can swim. And that's when i remember about your pic.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlazeTBW In reply to riodile [2010-08-17 04:23:12 +0000 UTC]

I would prefer you try and make your own kind of canine (as in I would rather you not use the head for reference). Just because one person draws it one way doesn't mean that's the only way. That and you can probably design something you'd be more happy with.

I advise taking a look at how others have drawn their canines, and then pull together which characteristics you like best. And don't be discouraged if it doesn't come out exactly how you want it, because that's what practice is for! This way you can have something just a little bit more original than just copying what someone else has done, and having your own twist to it~

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

riodile In reply to BlazeTBW [2010-08-17 05:12:59 +0000 UTC]

canines huh? hmm.. i think i'll try do find it..
say, what other animal that able to swim? other than crocodile, dog, fishes, and whales.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlazeTBW In reply to riodile [2010-08-17 05:25:55 +0000 UTC]

Actually- just about any four-legged animal can swim. Cats (big and small), mice/rodents, rabbits, monkeys, bears- horses and deer can swim, but probably not for long periods of time. Elephants, hippos, penguins, birds like seagulls, ducks and pelicans- as well as lizards and such.
