Description My first tutorial, EVER.
And I'm so excited that it's done yet terrified because I surely made mistakes and typos and more mistakes

And note that english is not my native language so I can't express myself as fluently as I would in finnish.

Anyway~
This tutorial is about Paint Tool SAI basics that I could think of when I was constructing this. I most likely forgot to mention a million things~
Also this is kinda just tutorial practise; I will be making coloring and drawing tutorials later(And I really mean LATER) and they take so much more time and effort~

Still, hopefully this helps somebody~

"Where can I get this awesome program?"
This is the official site, I think: www.systemax.jp/en/sai/
You can download a 31 day trial version, but after that you'll have to buy it.
Piracy exist, but I don't know where.

tutorial, my oc SaiΒ©Me

I know that the easy pattern can be done by clipping group. I'm completely self-taught with both photoshop and SAI so I've just developed my own ways.

what kind of tablet do you use and it is it pressure sensitive? Because I cannot get that smooth brush look with the pen and I use the same settings....

BloodlineV In reply to voidmonster [2012-06-18 14:14:39 +0000 UTC]

I use an old Wacom GD and occasionally Wacom Intuos 3, and yes, they're pressure sensitive.
I don't always use the settings portrayed in this tutorial, I change them depending on the picture's style.

For some reason, I can't change the shape of my lines like in the "make it interesting" part of this tutorial. I'm not sure if it's SAI or my tablet. What are your thoughts on that? It's been bugging me for a while

BloodlineV In reply to SuriFox1 [2012-06-18 14:09:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, if the pressure option doesn't work the problem is usually in the tablet.. P:
But I can't really say for sure.

I also use the pen to do the lineart but when it's finished it always looks so messy.
I really try to make it look good but it always ends up looking so super messy.
What should i do ?

I don't know.... I'm not an official help center....
Try reducing the edge hardness on the advanced settings....?

Try making first a sketch, and the lineart in another layer, using a LINEWORK type of layer in the linework you can increase or decrease the pressure of the lines to make them more smooth and/or 3D-looking.

Hope that helps you

Actually i already tried that but it still looks messy.
I also tried different ways of doing the lineart and i figured out that the pen tool works best for me.
But thank You anyway.

I got so far into doing this with layering, and I kept screweing up. Then I remembered, "Opacity lock!" I went to the exact area where your Opacity lock function is located, but it's not there!

All I see is "Clipping Group" and "Preserve Opacity" but preserve opacity is locked because it's a line work layer. Help me... D:

BloodlineV In reply to Thief-Of-Eternity [2012-06-18 14:05:57 +0000 UTC]

Preserve Opacity means the same as opacity lock. :3 Just click the tab.
I never use linework layers, because I don't know how they work.

Thanks though <3

It's a great tutorial, but you don't give any specific way to make the pen tool smooth. I've tried to put the quality and stuff, but I don't have 'max density' and it won't let me acess the other besides the last two, even though it is already set the way it should be in this tut.

i have been having so much trouble with the lineart. You see, I cant get it to be smooth and fade out at the edges like yours. I have been told to use a tablet, adjust the pressure/min size/ stabilizer and I have tried all that yet I still cannot get the lineart smooth like that. Please help!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BloodlineV In reply to firjirbaby [2012-05-14 15:19:23 +0000 UTC]

Well I can't know what is causing the problem... P:
Have you tried the "advanced settings" tab below the pen properties? Try to reduce the "Edge Hardness" to 0.
I don't know anything else to suggest. :/

So you draw the rough sketch and put the line art in a different layer?

I don't get the pattern thingy...where should I place the new layer(that was named "pattern")? below the lineart or above it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BloodlineV In reply to Sakuelle [2012-04-12 14:58:21 +0000 UTC]

Lineart is always uppermost. Everything else goes below it including the pattern layer.
