Description Since I get repeatedly asked about how I make pony sprites, I created this simple step-by-step tutorial for making a basic trotting sprite.

This is the first time I made a tutorial and I may not be very good at explaining things, but I still hope that you will find this useful.

Edit: The forum which contains the templates (as mentioned in this tutorial) is currently down. Please try this link instead: www.mediafire.com/file/le2j2ig…

I have a question. how the bodies of the ponies are made?, for example, that of a stallion pony Pegasus. How is would make the body?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. The body is from a template that can be downloaded and used freely for non-commercial purposes. You can find them for example in 's gallery.
If you want to make the body completely yourself, well, you could trace it from show vectors or just do it by eye.

Botchan-MLP In reply to GoldenSpaceCat [2014-05-01 16:24:10 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Botchan-MLP In reply to GoldenSpaceCat [2014-05-01 17:44:39 +0000 UTC]

But you can also find it in 's gallery.

No I meant the animated one, not frame by frame...

Botchan-MLP In reply to PerlaMLP [2014-04-29 15:05:19 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if a pre-animated template even exists, but I guess you could just animate one yourself.

hello! i was just wondering if you knew of a faster way to recolour the base without going over it with the pencil tool frame by frame. I've tried using "add and replace" but it dosn't seem to get the colour quite right, leaving it still tinted grey. do you know any other methods i could use? or maybe a way to improve the add and replace tool?

Well, since I have no idea what program you use, I can't really comment on that. What I do is using a simple color replacer tool. Most image editing programs I'm aware of have that. Even good old Windows Paint.

Kuryfurry2 In reply to ??? [2014-02-16 17:45:27 +0000 UTC]

Uh, how do you make the idle animations? Do you think you could make a tutorial for that one, too?

I'm ultimately confused on how to do so.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Botchan-MLP In reply to Kuryfurry2 [2014-02-17 06:38:19 +0000 UTC]

Idle animations basically follow the same steps. A basic idle animation is usually even easier than a trot since you don't have to synch the mane or possible clothes to the moving body. Honestly, I don't even know what I could possibly say in an idle tutorial that I didn't already cover in this one.

You just use it like you'd use any other website. I can't go into more detail unless you're more specific about the problem you have.

Vinyl-Beat In reply to Bre-Ce-Cuca [2013-11-10 14:01:39 +0000 UTC]

I use Gimp. And yes, it can be done with Gimp, since it has multiple layers, and all of the other things described above. The only thing that gimp can't do is animate it.

hoIograph In reply to Vinyl-Beat [2013-12-29 23:33:46 +0000 UTC]

Actually, you can animate with Gimp.

hoIograph In reply to Vinyl-Beat [2013-12-30 16:36:32 +0000 UTC]

It's actually pretty simple. When extracting the file, just change the title from .png to .gif. It's easy from there. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Vinyl-Beat In reply to hoIograph [2013-12-30 17:02:53 +0000 UTC]

but, does that animate it by the layers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hoIograph In reply to Vinyl-Beat [2013-12-30 17:40:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes. You just click 'disposal', 'replace', then check the box that says 'use disposal'.
