Download for better view.And I have something to say about the 7th step: choose the color you want to erase with LEFT click, then you erase it (or recolor it in white) with RIGHT click.
This is a tutorial for all the people out there asking how I make my bases.
It's very simple, guys, really.
You just have to get used to it!
PS: the rubber tool is simply the ERASER. Okay?

I'm currently using this tutorial for making a base. I'm doing a Princess Celestia base! (since Celestia bases are not seen very much onto dA...)

Huh, if you hate the #7 part. Just simply download GIMP 2.6.2!! That way, you can get the picture on one LAYER and you can trace the picture (for the base) on ANOTHER LAYER! when you're done, just simply delete the layer of the picture of Mrs Cake or somepony else etc. And you will be left with only your trace lines, no need to sit there for hours of rubbing it out.. It's much easier, and it's what I always do

You have no idea how MUCH this tutorial helped me! Before, I simply tried to color the outline with the pencil tool (which is a very lenghty process) and nothing was done that time, because I got bored very quickly.
This same way can be used for making pixel vectors. I just discovered how helpful the curve tool is thanks to this tutorial.
I uploaded both a base and a pixel vector. They're nowhere near as good as your bases, but I hope that one day I'll be better.

Yeah a lot of people got stuck in this part. Basically you have to select the color you want the erase (wich means that you'll turn it white) with left click, then select white with right click. Now select the eraser and erase that color with right click
