I think this picture inspires me to make a whole series based on Sword & Sorcery. I really love the genre, but I need to read more books in it.

Aw thanks. Well... There's no way I can say this without sounding like a commercial for my own products... But this illustration WAS done as a cover for a "how-to" book on the subject. Which you can purchase at a bookstore, or on Amazon, or on the Store Page of my website. Just go here: [link] ...and scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Saw the original line art. This makes it look even better!!
I like the blue tint, i assume that its an effect from the wizard-lady's magic glowing in her hand?

"its so dark in here, add some light please"
*makes hand glow*
"what the ..?? QUICK turn it off TURN IT OFF"

Wow, you are probably the first person who has ever said they like a colored version of my art better than the black and white version! Thanks! And yes, the blue tint is supposed to be eminating from her hand.

ddt-poison In reply to BryanBaugh [2006-10-16 07:20:34 +0000 UTC]

I prefer line art, the old b/w.
But sometimes a piece needs that extra bit, i mean when i saw the original i imagined it to be in a dungeon where the fires on he walls made enough light, but i mean what you did then made it look completely different!! And when an artist does that to a piece without "breaking" it, then i can do no other than agrree the new art is better!

henrideacon [2006-09-21 00:19:31 +0000 UTC]

I like this one because the monsters have a "noble" presence, like they are not just the run of the mill nasties, but are leaders of the clan, with the bottom feeders in the background. Or maybe im just full of crap. Anyway, great pic.... will be looking out for more of your zombie pics too.. they are the best on the net.

Thank you so much for taking the time to say all that stuff. A very thoughtful insight and a wonderful compliment. It's remarks like this that keep me chugging along. And by the way... the zombies are coming soon.

I really love the Harryhausenesque cyclops... my only critique is the shading on the edges of the swords make them look kinda dull like they've got no cutting edge. still cool all around but that one little thing....

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BryanBaugh In reply to APBarr [2006-09-10 23:05:09 +0000 UTC]

That's funny, what you dislike about it is exactly the look I was after! Whenever I draw swords, axes, or other sharp weapons, I like to make them look like they've been used to batter and cleave so many victims' bodies, bones, and skulls, that by now they are all worn down and blunt. But their owners (whether a Barbarian in a fantasy piece or a psycho killer in a horror piece) are so crazy that they just keep on usin' 'em anyway! I don't know, to me it just seems like getting chopped by a blunt blade would hurt a lot worse, be a lot messier, and take a lot longer to sever the flesh and muscle tissues than a perfectly clean, sharp blade that could slit you in two and kill you in three seconds flat.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

APBarr In reply to BryanBaugh [2006-09-10 23:55:40 +0000 UTC]

well I never said I didn't like it just that I thought it looked odd.... your explanation tho was extremely well thought out. you are deffinatly a sickie... now go draw someone using the blade part of one of those paper guillotines they used to have at school to hack something apart. they'd make great improvised weapons.

and again awesome drawing.

Thanks, Zage. Yeah, I had a lot of fun coloring this one. I think it could probably still use another half hour of tinkering to get it just right, but for now I basically consider it done. I will probably go back into it and tidy it up later this week and then re-post it, just to finish her off.
