Ooh, yay! I've always wanted to learn how to make a marionette. Thanks so much for putting this up.

Me too Though I might need some info on wood-carving as well (never tried it!). Is it difficult? How can I learn it? Until now I've seen mostly polymer-clay or clay marionettes, the wooden ones are... trickier, I guess. But so much prettier too!

I'm going to eventually get to the carving part.
I've just posted part two, which leads up to actually carving. It will probably be covered in part four.
I like to carve. It seems pretty easy, but that is just me. Everything that I have ever carved is posted on dA. I'm still learning and trying to improve.
There are a few ways to learn. There are many books on carving. You may be able to find someone in your area that carves who is willing to give you lessons. I learn best by doing. I literally picked up some wood and started. My only reference on marionettes was a book that I read decades ago. Before I started carving, I had never done any kind of sculpture work.
The first marionette that I carved looks nice but is not the best puppet. I learned a lot though. Hopefully the tutorials will pass some of what I've learned on.
Just be careful. It is real easy to cut yourself severely. I will cover safety when I get to the actual carving portion of the tutorial.

Okay, I'll wait for your (great!!!) tuts and in the meantime I'll look for either some books or some carvers here in the area... or, best of all, some wood
