Description

“Oh, dear, oh, dear, the beautiful sea quite gone. No more sailing, no more swimming, no more fishing, No great storms, no transparent ice, and no gleaming black water reflecting the stars. Finished, lost, gone!” And he put his head on his knees and cried as if his heart would break.

“But, Snuff,” said Moomintroll reproachfully, “you have always been so happy-go-lucky. It’s dreadful to see you despairing like this.”

“I know,” said Snufkin. “But I’ve always loved the sea more than anything else. This is so sad.”

- Comet in Moominland

I'm still struggling with drawing anything at all. Even drawing this was very difficult for me.

if you want to reblog, please do it from here, thanks: thefloatingstone.tumblr.com/po…

Oh goodnes, this is too sad! I have to say - I saw the show before I read the books and this scene in the first book took me by surprise b/c I was used to thinking of Snufkin as sort of, well, irrepressible - it was weird imagining him just sitting down and crying, but then again I'm not sure anything as awful as the sea drying up ever happened in the show. Anyways - this is a bit of a heartwrenching depiction and it's very well-done! I'll bet you didn't have many references for his sad face, so I totally admire that you've very convincingly captured the emotion in this character! Poor Snufkin!

I saw the show first too XD but I've been slowly working through the books. I think in the first book Tove was probably still feeling out Snufkin's character. You can see she was still playing with ideas at this point in the story But that doesn't mean I wasn't gonna draw such a heart-tugging scene.

I'm really glad you like this. I drew it while having a major art block though. I want to revisit it at some point and draw a proper picture of this scene.

The sea does actually dry up in the movie of the show which is the story of the comet (although with some changes here and there.) But Snufkin does not cry in the movie or I'd have remembered it. He's much more together and calm in the movie, as he is in the show itself. The movie is great though

I think you're right on - Snufkin goes through quite the character transformation from book 1 to the last one (guess I won't say anything else about it!) The writing style changes, the types of stories change, the characters change... A bit like the Harry Potter franchise, I guess! PLEASE REVISIT! I think it's fabulous as it is (obviously) but I just looked at some of the rest of your gallery and boy you've got a major handle on color and style, I'd love to see what could happen with this! I did see that the sea dried up in the movie and I do remember noting the lack of this particular scene. Unfortunately I couldn't find the movie anywhere in English and unfortunately I'm not good enough with any other language to listen in anything BUT English... So I didn't get to 'listen' to it... But it was fun to watch. Grsh I love the Moomins. <3 Again, thanks for sharing this!

A little bit of a late reply but thank you very much
I'll see how I feel about revisiting this. i WANT to but you know how it is, you need to also want to sit down and actually do it too XD I'll just wait until I'm feeling it.
I managed to find the movie with English subtitles myself but they were strange subs because they weren't a translation of the spoken Japanese but an english translation of the swedish subtitles XDDD so they were perfectly understandable but a little different from what Japanese I can understand.
I can always share that version if you weren't able to find a sub version yourself

I totally get the "I want to but I don't feel like it". That's pretty much how I feel about everything I "want" to do right now. I think if I could buy motivation I'd be broke but not unhappy.

I once found this movie with English subtitles but they were so strange - I think it must have been an automatic translation or something, they made no sense. So I watched a Spanish-sub, which made slightly more sense, but only slightly. Yes, I would be so thankful if you could share where you found your English-sub version!

No worries! this is the one I watched, (You'll notice immediately Sniff calls him "Moomin" but the subtitles say "Moomintroll" So it's just little things like that since it's the Swedish translation but otherwise it's fine )

And yeah I totally hear you! XD if I had more motivation to do all the things though I'd probably starve because I'd always be drawing/writing

So its like your drawing skill is sick?

Maybe XD;; I'm always so exhausted when I even think of drawing. I had to mentally drag myself kicking and screaming to actually sit down and do something. It's a battle between feeling completely worn out and battling feelings of "It's gonna suck anyway so why bother"

and when it sucks,  it discourages you even more.  And it feels like art is not fun anymore.  I will often try to find something that would inspire me enough to be able to draw, there is an energy to find and its hard to locate at times.  Sometimes I can find it, and want nothing else to do other than draw.  If someone tries to get me to do something else, I snarl at them.

U should draw more moomins. They are easy to draw and you like them so maybe they'll push the artist block away

It's quite fun to see you drawing Moomin characters.
And speaking of them, the sea and fishing, this is my coffee mug .

Aaaah, I'm so jealous! ;o; I really want a Moomin mug, but they're so expensive D'X and I would like to use it but because they cost so much I don't think I could

Dragunique In reply to C-Puff [2015-11-05 18:24:32 +0000 UTC]

This is my daughters mug. They aren't really that expensive unless you want to get one of the rare or discontinued ones. Common ones or new mugs are sold here in Finland at 19-24 € .
Do you have a favorite one?

C-Puff In reply to Dragunique [2015-11-09 19:30:28 +0000 UTC]

Even that is very expensive for me the exchange rate is very very bad because my country is so poor right now. (our government is slowly destroying us.) So I couldn't afford one 8D;; especially not with shipping. It's a pity. Maybe one day I will be able to leave here and live somewhere where I can afford these kinds of things.

That mug is really really super cute! X3 I love it!!

I don't have a favourite mug XD But I have any things I like from Moomins which I know are on mugs I'd probably love. I know there's a mug shaped like the Moomin house and that's amazing! And of course I love Snufkin XD so anything with him on it I love. And I really like the hattifatteners. And Too-Tiki XD There's just so many things I love!
