Updated 2009-04-12: Added a new RtL Korean Translation by Vulpes .

Updated 2009-04-11: Rev 02, basically includes a license change to the SVG portion.

This is a Right-to-Left Re-Adaptation of the Ubunchu English Translation , an Ubuntu-based manga by Hiroshi Seo , and translated into English by Doctormo , Fumihito Yoshida , and Hajime Mizuno .

In addition to retaining the original orientation of the Japanese version, this version features a custom Instructional insert drawn by me, instructing readers (unaccustomed to the RtL style) on how to properly read RtL manga. It also includes previously omitted sound effects and words, and some proposed alternative dialogue, most of which has already been merged in the original English translation.

I am getting PTSD from my Cyberpatriot Ubuntu system hardening.

We used bad school computers and I would always be the unlucky one that had some kind of problem with my image.Β

1. I somehow turned off the GUI and had to use command line for everything, and that somehow downgraded the image to version 12 instead of 14
2. I locked the image in a safe mode loop where it couldn't find the image.
3. I got the firewall to turn on and off every 20 seconds without doing anything but turning the firewall on.
Β etc, but you get the point.

haha, "C-chan", now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time....

A long time...

But yeah, I was involved with this back when I suggested there should be a right-to-left version instead, since the original English translation was left to right. I also added a few things to make the English translation nice and unique, such as custom lettering and a nice insert with custom art. ^^

But that was EONS ago... >v>

Nice work.

What did you use for the drawing? Is there any Ubuntu / Linux too like Manga Studio?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

C-quel In reply to adamedoe [2012-03-17 12:56:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, although actually I didn't post this here for the art (which was not done by me), but rather the translation editing. The original art was done by the manga's author, and I think he might have used just regular hand-drawing (with post-production work in Photoshop).

Inkscape, Synfig Studio and MyPaint probably come fairly close to the functionality of Manga Studio in Linux, although Manga Studio itself can be installed anyway using Wine. And this is not including current and upcoming programs in Android, which opens up all sorts of new venues for Linux.

I don't wanna rely in anything not free to get I'm already using Inkscape. I'll give the other two a try!

PS: Let's keep Art and Creativity FREE. Screw MS and Apple.

That's the spirt. Screw those two, especially MS for ruining the state of software to begin with (and now pretending that they're the victims of their own stupidity and patent trolling).

I would have mentioned Krita and GIMP too, but they both have their sets of problems that don't quite make them recommendable. Certainly not like Inkscape or MyPaint or the new Blender, which you can basically plop and learn almost right away. ^^

Yeah, the version mentioned in that BoingBoing post is Doctormo's original English translation, which reads Left to Right. You can view his Ubunchu post here in DA if you haven't already:

[link]

Mine is a Right-to-Left re-adaptation, but is still about 95% similar to the original so we should both be interchangeable. ^^

There is also a French translation if you'd like to give that a read-through. ^-^

Oh, and didn't know about the Chinese or Thai works in progress, although I also recall someone on your blog saying he'd work on an Italian translation.

Guess we'll wait and see where they spring up, hopefully either in your blog or Seotch-san's.

C-quel In reply to doctormo [2009-04-17 01:06:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Doc!

Yeah, finally managed to add the Portuguese version to my list -- it was torture not being able to do so for hours. >.<

I think it could use some visible borders, but otherwise I like the table you set up! ^v^

The only thing I can suggest adding to it at this time is the Indonesian translation (checked it out just now, it's pretty good), and my PNG Zip File , since anti-PDF sentiments seem to have mysteriously sprung up all of a sudden.

Not sure why -- it's an open standard as of last July -- but oh well, it's easy enough to zip up a bunch of images. -v-

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

doctormo In reply to C-quel [2009-04-17 01:23:41 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, well PDF in my book is the format for printing and viewing read only documents. CBZ is ajust a zip file with pngs in it :-/ anyway, it'd be nice if the comic was all SVG and not just some parts because then I could take the translations and make real switches so that anyone could download a single svg and view it in their local language. (trust me I can do it :-P)

I have no idea where the anti-pdf stuff comes from, probably Windows people, since Windows is the only platform to not include PDF viewer by default. Either that or traditional CBZ people.

I've added the Indonesian translation... but the sources are hard to acquire.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

C-quel In reply to doctormo [2009-04-17 01:46:16 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, don't doubt you could, you obviously have skills. On the other hand, given the level of raster-based detail in the comic, those would make for fairly large and unwieldy SVGs. ^___^'

[that, or the sacrifice of some detail]

I guess it's great as it is that we have a very generous and thoughtful author, as well a bunch of people ready and willing to either spread the word or help translate it in other languages.

I can vouch [from my workplace] that Adobe Reader on Windows does get terribly annoying, especially since each release seems to get subsequently bloatier. There's nothing like Evince or KPDF, at least not readily available. -.-'

As for that Sauce file, it looks to me (by analyzing the background detail) that he drew over the original PSD/PNG files and thus no SVGs were involved.
So... WYSIWYG....

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

doctormo In reply to C-quel [2009-04-17 13:21:03 +0000 UTC]

The SVG should be smaller after the raster version reaches 60dpi, especially when you save it as svg.gz. Although I'm having a play at converting the title page to svg just to test the ideas.

Let you know if I complete it.

I'm very happy to see your RtL version of "Ubunchu!".
The reading-direction may not be familiar to English speeking people though, I'm glad it's preserve the orginal taste well.

Not only it's reading-direction, the sound effects and dialogs are also updated. I love it!

Thank you for your efforts on this translating work.
And I hope the readers will enjoy this version of "Ubunchu!" as well as other ones!

P.S.
It may depend on the environment, I couldn't see the pages after 10 on the PDF. Hmmm, Possibly, there might be something wrong?

And thank you very much for letting me know about the PDF file! I feel kinda stupid, though, because despite updating the source file and everything else, the one thing I appear to have forgotten to update was that PDF file itself! It was still stuck at a pre-revision 01 state.....
