I used to suck at Illustrator too. Then I took a class and found out I was actually pretty good at it. I had no idea.

Still couldn't grasp meshes though, but I was determined to figure them out. So I knuckled down and just started making meshes. That's how I've learned most of the design programs out there - just messing around, not letting them intimidate me. My first meshes sucked, but I kept at it and eventually got better at them. The best advice I could give anyone who wants to learn Illustrator is just to mess with it, play with it. Use a tool, see what it does. Draw something, then do it again. Refine it, expand it, add to it. Do it enough and you'll cease to suck at it.

Thanks for all the comments.

Ahh yes, I'm also one of the many who can't get past Photoshop. Vectors aren't my bestfriend. This piece is really stunning though, I'm not sure who she is but those are the definite features of an Asian lady

If you're going into some kind of design career, I would highly advise getting into the other programs. It's a necessity for those careers. Plus, it's really rewarding to a creative person.

Her name is Fan Bingbing, btw. She's an actress in China.

I'm going into animation - although if I fail at that, I would take your advise and dabble in illustrator (right now I'm pretty clueless about the different file formats and how to make it become a jpg and stuff)

Alright, I'll wiki her up

Might be a good thing to learn how to use all the various programs anyway, even if you do continue with animation. You will find yourself needing those 2D programs from time to time in the animation field as well.

how did you do the eyebrows? stroke by stroke?

Tried to do the same thing. I'm having trouble blending things together. For example, a meshed nose blended with a meshed face.

Cage-E-Bee In reply to Whatsome [2011-04-30 19:50:49 +0000 UTC]

I'll usually start out with a simple mesh for eyebrows. You can often see a kind of solid color shape beneath the hair on eyebrows. I approximate that shape with a mesh or sometimes just a regular gradient, then draw the hairs, using a very small brush with a low opacity. Draw a tuft of hair that looks realistic and then select that tuft and duplicate it a bunch of times across the brow. Then you begin selecting individual hairs and moving them around and deleting others until you get a good looking and relatively random-looking arrangement of hairs.

Blending meshes is also a bit of an art. You begin by sampling the edge of the neighboring meshes for each point on a mesh. Of course, sometimes that sampling isn't accurate, so in those cases you have to manually match it by sampling an area of similar color repeatedly with the Eyedropper tool until the blend appears seamless. It can be a bit of work.

Do you also use mask to blend one mesh to the next?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cage-E-Bee In reply to Whatsome [2011-05-09 23:41:12 +0000 UTC]

Rarely. I suppose I could, but I find it just as easy to match colors between meshes.

Oh I know! I have been drawing with it in a photorealistic way as well as this is part of my job. Maybe this is why I never dared to touch it for private pictures. Also my works have always been dead things, never something alive. For sure this work here is a really good one!
