Description If you find this little walkthrough useful, I’d be grateful if you could add it to your favourites or leave a comment; just to let me know whether or not I should create another similar project in the future.

Link to part two

I don't know what's with the scanner, but the colours of the painting (especially those in the face), are closer to the original photo in real life and not quite so "harsh" as they appear here.
I'll see if I can take a photo of the painting in daylight instead, later on.

wow. how big is the painting? and what sort of brushes did you use? i find it very hard to paint with thin brushes, prefering bigger and thicker ones. of course i have a different style but i was wondering

also... masking fluid gets me really interested. i never worked with something like that

did you sketch or draft the drawing? it's very good (i am so not good at that. i can't really do lineart. i mostly draw by using light/shadow and layers. i sort of "sculpt" into the drawing, can't trace clean lines at all. and when painting actually a lot of times i don't really sketch at all which in watercolour is sorta disastrous if you make a mistake heh

The painting is 18 * 27 cm (approx. 7 * 11") and I used two Kolinsky sable brushes - both round with a fine point - in sizes #1 and #7 (the only brushes I use for my work).
Small brushes with few bristles are not able to hold as much water/paint as a brush with a larger circumference. The more hair the better water/paint holding capacity, so if you can find a brush with a very fine point but a rather substantial "body" it might be easier to get used to.

I can highly recommend art masking fluid, you should give it a try some day! It makes a lot of things so much easier.

I usually just draw up the lines directly onto the watercolour paper - after a bit of practice it's not very difficult to find the main lines of the picture and sort of "copy" them to the paper. It happens that I make a preliminary sketch on a piece of sketching paper for the most complicated work though.
Most of the time I need to remove quite a lot of extra lines from the watercolour paper, that I sketch as support but that are not really needed for the colouring later on.

I don't think I could paint without lines to go by; I'd panic!

CamillaMalcus In reply to CarrotStalker [2010-04-18 13:40:22 +0000 UTC]

CarrotStalker In reply to CamillaMalcus [2010-04-18 17:08:55 +0000 UTC]
