Description
If you find this little walkthrough useful, I’d be grateful if you could add it to your favourites or leave a comment; just to let me know whether or not I should create another similar project in the future.Link to part two
I don't know what's with the scanner, but the colours of the painting (especially those in the face), are closer to the original photo in real life and not quite so "harsh" as they appear here.
I'll see if I can take a photo of the painting in daylight instead, later on.

Wow thank you!
That is great, i even like the tutorial-layout!!!!
and yes please...part II.
This tutorial makes me wanna try it.
and i haven't touched watercolors in years.
Do you think other "watercolor"-paper will work as well?
Thanks again :ug:...this really is a great and useful tutorial!!

Thanks very much, I'm so glad to hear it! It would be fantastic if you rediscovered watercolours!
Yes, I think warm pressed papers will work too, but the result would probably be different - I utilize the grain of the paper to achieve some of the texture of the skin and so forth. Cold pressed papers of a lighter weight would work fine as well, as long as they're stretched properly (or they'll buckle for sure).
A drawing- or cartridge paper is not ideal though.. that would make it a completely different kind of painting, with a very different style.
My pleasure, I'm happy to know it could be of help!

This is an amazing walk, it is very helpful, because I love watercolor, but yet, I am a little scared when using them...
aside from this awesome tutorial, do you have any tips for a newbie watercolorist?

CamillaMalcus In reply to xanadu125 [2010-04-18 14:42:32 +0000 UTC]
Thank you, I'm so glad to hear that you find it helpful!
Oh, hm.. A good watercolour paper can make a world of difference, so that's a good start. A smooth cartridge paper can give interesting effects but is really unpredictable and difficult to work with, so I'd recommend a heavier watercolour paper with some grain to begin with. A good brush makes a big difference too, so if you can invest in a good quality sable brush that comes to a fine point, that'd make painting a lot easier. No need for more than one or two brushes if they're good ones.
Apart from that, my best advice would be to have fun! As long as you enjoy what you do, the rest usually comes naturally. ^^ Don't be afraid of experimenting a bit; one's allowed to make mistakes. That's the best way to learn.

Finally, we get to see how you create these masterpieces of yours ;D Wow, I love the layout. Your skill with watercolour is equalled by your ability on the computer... it's just so informative.
