the skies have been going nuts here recently. so many flashes that ive lost count, and the most rumbly thunder youve ever heard. most of the storms here pass by on the west, so this is the first chance ive had to take any pics.
i use a 30 sec exposure (maximum for my camera) and as soon as i see a bolt cross where the camera is pointed i turn the camera off. i have a canon eos 300d and you can close the shutter by turning the camera off, and it still saves the image, so that means that i dont have to hold my finger on the shutter all the time and i can get the brightest bolts by killing the exposure early. i leave the aperture on automatic, since the lightning usually provides more than enough light to wash out a higher setting.

Maybe I'll give it a go, but with all the street lamps around and limited views I may just have to get lucky with the timing.

well its all about luck really. just make sure youve got plenty of space on the card if youre usin a digital camera, and try to predict where the storm is heading to. good luck with it
