quick question: I'm doing a zombie makeup tutorial (more of a paper, really) for one of my university classes. I used your blood recipes (the wound blood and the gooey blood, specifically) in my paper. How would you like me to credit you?

well since it's a university paper I would assume you have a "Works Cited" page. So you can put me as a link in your works cited. and my name is Laura McDonald, if that is of any help...?
That's gotta be a pretty sweet paper? What kind of class are you doing it for?

It's actually a little more informal than that (which kind of kills me). But I have a glossary and I put you in there.
It's awesome! My professor read my rough draft yesterday and adored it.
I'm doing it for a general composition class. We're learning how to formally write about a creative/mechanical process.

What about putting it on clothing you wanted to stain? Would it wash out easily? I'm going as a Hunter from the Left 4 Dead games, also is it ok to have in your mouth like dripping down your face kind of?

CaptainShort1 In reply to ToxicJinxy [2010-09-20 14:51:40 +0000 UTC]
It does stain light clothes, especially white. It stains it pink. But I have noticed that it rarely stains on darker clothes. So going as a hunter, your clothes will probably be dark, so you should be fine!
And yes! The bloods made from corn syrup, food coloring, and cocoa powder are edible! So you can eat it if you like! But don't eat the petroleum jelly based blood...it's not edible!

this is awesome do u think this will stain clothes?

yeah, it stains light colored clothes, a very light shade of pink. So wear something that you can sacrifice!

Good recipe. I little bit of yellow food coloring helps too. The iron in our blood gives a slightly orange tint to it as it dries. Then as blood congeals it becomes more burgundy/brown. Depending on whether you want the look of fresh blood, kinda fresh blood, or old blood, you might have a couple different recipes.

I'm making it tomorrow at my friends house and we're going to use it in some photos. But because I'm in Australia, we couldn't find any corn syrup in our local supermarket. I figure corn flour will probably work. . . It's a thickener. What do you think?

it may work dissolving it in water...but it may be a little cloudy...try it out and let me know!

Well. . . that sure was. . . interesting. It worked out pretty well, although if we let it sit for too long it looked really fake. and my model for it sucked. She kept on laughing. That was a practice though, once I get the photos off her I'll load them up.

is it okay to use for people who have skin allergies?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CaptainShort1 In reply to jeyssiekah [2010-05-31 16:19:32 +0000 UTC]
i'm not entirely sure. if you think you may be allergic to any of the ingredients, then i wouldn't use it. if you are not sure, test a small amount on your skin, and see what happens.
I have sensitive skin and it does not bother me.

Didn't know it was so easy to make fake blood, just a question, I don't live in the USA, could you give me a reference regarding the use of the petroleum jelly so I can find it in here?
Keep up the good work

CaptainShort1 In reply to crackslide [2010-05-31 16:26:07 +0000 UTC]
Petroleum jelly is also know as Vaseline. In the US you can normally buy it at a drug store, pharmacy, or department store like target. [link]

Awesome,
but I found my thick blood is very repeling of the thinner blood. Any way to fix this?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CaptainShort1 In reply to Neitzarr [2010-05-06 12:21:44 +0000 UTC]
not really, it's the oil in the petroleum jelly that does that. I found that too, but I just add more of the thinner blood when I realize it's starting to come off.

hey!
amazing stuff, but i've a question,
does the blood stay always wet or will it dry up?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CaptainShort1 In reply to Gemma-IG [2010-05-04 17:48:17 +0000 UTC]
The petroleum jelly blood doesn't dry much. It will get a little stiff, but you can just move it around to reactivate it.
The corn syrup blood will dry and become sticky, just like any other syrup would do. It takes a bit of time to dry, but I do prefer that it dries a bit in order to photograph it better.

In the past, as an edible substitute for the daring kids who end up licking at their bloody wounds more than they should and complain about getting a mouthful of nasty petroleum jelly, I've purchased a small bag of shredded coconut and either used it as-is or mashing it up a bit with the Karo syrup.

CaptainShort1 In reply to kokutan-tenshi [2010-04-13 12:48:00 +0000 UTC]
haha! that's a good trick, is the coconut for more dimension and depth?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
kokutan-tenshi In reply to CaptainShort1 [2010-04-13 14:46:37 +0000 UTC]
It can be used for that, yes. And the shreds themselves work incredibly well as torn flesh wounds when lined up parallel to each other, simulating a tear in the skin.

This tutorial is fantastic! I've tried it, and have in fact posted my pic and a link to this tutorial. I tried using table syrup instead (didn't have any corn syrup) and worked well too. It was sooooooo sticky! And delicious I'll have to try the one with Vaseline next time
Thanks for this tutorial!
