Awesome! Though the only real problem I have is getting hair nice and zombie-like greasy and bloody. 'Cause I'd like to be able to become a zombie without going a few days without showering, lol.

Thank you! and yes that is a problem...my last shoot on Thursday we didn't get any blood in her hair, cause she didn't want to wash it the next day. it was a success...hopefully! we'll see when I edit my images...

well, I don't care if I get blood in my hair. What I'm trying to say is I want my hair to look greasy and bloody and zombie-like. And the only way I can really think of doing that is not taking a shower... which I'd prefer if there was another way, lol.

I'm really, really allergic to red food dye. All the commercial ones contain it, and I can't find a home recipe that doesn't either. Is there any practical alternative that you know of? Any suggestions at all?

Well i would try to use something edible and/or natural...maybe powdered kool-aid or red fruit punch... it may taste weird with the cocoa powder, but still edible.
you might be able to use red paint too...but i don't think it would have the same effect as food dye (and definitely not edible), you can experiment!
gooooood question! thanks!

Kool-Aid and Fruit Punch also contain red food dye. That's the problem. I need a natural alternative, if there is one.

I know that Charms Lollipops use tumeric as a colorant, since they were invented before artificial dyes, but I don't have the faintest idea of how to prepare it, what it would need to be mixed with, or if the color would come out alright.

yeah, this is tricky, but good for me to find out if I ever have a model who is also allergic to red food dye...

I know it's a wierd one, but food dye allergies are not as uncommon as you think. I'm allergic to red dye. My cousin is allergic to blue dye. One of the women I work with has a son who's allergic to yellow dye.
I've searched the entire internet for a substitute fake blood, by the way. I lack the knowledge of making the regular home recipes to come up with a viable alternative. My thoughts, though, were chili powder or tumeric, but they can burn the skin a bit, not to mention getting clumpy...I mean, they'd probably be great for clots and all, but they'd be awful for everything else.

CaptainShort1 In reply to IsBreaLiomCaife [2010-04-06 00:14:42 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it would be great for clotty blood, but if you wanted a smoother blood it would be tough to dissolve chili powder.
You can always look at natural juices like, cranberry, pomegranate they are pretty dark in color, and adding some corn syrup and maybe some ketchup would thicken it up? I bet it would taste nasty with ketchup, haha.

Ketchup has a certain graininess as well...I'm betting pomegranate, pomegranate/raspberry, cranberry raspberry, or pomegranate blueberry mixed with corn syrup and maybe the cocoa would probably be close.

That's why I was thinking of pomegranate blueberry. It's a much richer color.

For dark edible blood full of different consistencies depending on how much water you add:
1 Box Red Velvet cake mix
1 Bottle of Choc Syrup to darken
Add water till you get desired thickness.
It's less sticky and won't stain as much as food coloring does. To top it off, it makes for GREAT brain like head trauma.
Marshmallows make for great brain matter and fruit roll ups make for great ligament tears. Best part is, it's all delicious.

What an informative tutorial! I really appreicate people like you who are willing to share their artistic talents! This was very in-depth and simple. You should make it into a small book titled: "How to make fake blood, for dummies." XD
