Stardate 2273.5: Starfleet's Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Nagura begins the long process of refitting the remaining ships with in the Federation's Armada. The first starship was the U.S.S. Enterprise as it was nearly completed at San Francisco Shipyards in Earth's orbit. Captain Ash Taylor of the U.S.S. Discovery arrived at McKinley Station where he expected to receive decommissioning orders from the Chief of Starfleet Operations, Rear Admiral James T. Kirk only to be informed that the Discovery was being refitted, but not with Taylor as it's master. By Stardate 2275.7, the Discovery hade completed it's refit and was scheduled for it's shakedown cruise with Captain Antonio Giotto as it's new commander. After the end of it's shakedown, Captain Giotto and his crew began a five-year long mission of exploration into the Orion arm of the Milkyway Galaxy but also began black ops research into using warp technology in the creations of artificial wormholes, similar to the Enterprise's accidental warp engine imbalance.
On Stardate 2285.4: The U.S.S. Discovery was dispatched to retrieve and tractor the disabled U.S.S. Excelsior but was diverted to Starbase 39-Sierra when the cetacean probe entered Earth orbit. The Discovery was only remaining Crossfield-Class starship in service in the Federation armada.
