Stardate 2369.12, Fallowing the Cardassian withdrawal from the Bajor Sector and the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole. The Luna-Class was designed by Doctor Xin Ra-Havreii, of Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars, and initially conceived for scientific exploration of the Gamma Quadrant following the establishment of Starbase Deep Space 9. The project was sidelined by the impending threat from the Dominion in 2371 then restarted following the end of the Dominion War in 2376.
Stardate 2379.15, Shortly after the coup d'état of Empress Donatra and the anticipated wedding of Captain William Riker and Counselor Deanna Troi on Betazed, Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway offered command the Titan to Captain Riker as a "wedding present". Captain Riker respectfully and being humble due to being naked in front of a Starfleet Flag Officer, turned down the posting, but when asked who he thought would be a qualified candidate, Riker suggested Commander Data for the center seat. Data was hesitant at first but Riker convinced Data because he was unique and more then qualified for command, he also reminded him of the arguments about his legal status on Starbase 173. On Stardate 2379.20, Data officially was promoted to the rank of Captain and took command of the U.S.S. Titan when it was docked at Earth Spacedock. The ceremony was presided by Captain Picard who wished Data well and good luck. Data's first assignment along with the U.S.S. Voyager, U.S.S. Aventine and the U.S.S. Enterprise-C was to escort Empress Donatra to Camp Khitomer to begin the negotiations for the Romulan Star Empire to enter the accords.
