Stardate 2393.13, The Mariner-Class Starship was developed as the second Federation Starship with Quantum Slipstream as a standard propulsion drive. The design was taken from the staple of the old Crossfield-Class, and like it's predecessor is solely designed for deep space exploration, planetary surveys, scientific research and if need be; diplomatic missions. However, with the Federation, Klingons & Romulans engaged in all-out war with the Interstellar Concordium, future development of the Mariner-Class was placed on hold. By Stardate 2395, development for the Mariner-Class resumed as the prototype U.S.S. Mariner was taken out of storage and completed at Tranquility Base with the seconded of this ship's class, U.S.S. Grissom was under construction at Earth Spacedock.
