Description
(In the Langston Universe)In 2363, shortly after Starfleet launched the Enterprise-B, the Corps of Engineers began to develop the Wanderer-class long range explorer. This vessel fell back to the concept of the mid-23rd-century missions of the Constitution-class where vessels would be exploring the galaxy for years at a time and was considered "more advanced than the Enterprise-B" due to its role strictly as a scientific explorer and research vessel rather than a cruiser or a dreadnought. Very rarely was the Wanderer-class placed on border patrol or colony transports. Also Admiral's where not allowed to utilize the Wanderer's as their personnel flagships by order of the Commander-in-Chief of Starfleet. One of the unique design elements of the Wanderer was the prototype warp nacelle pylons which angled when going to warp, a quality which has not been observed in any other starship. This design element caused a number of issues doing its construction.
On Stardate 2364.3 the USS Wanderer was completed at the Atlanta Memorial shipyards on Earth and was placed into service for its trial runs and shakedown cruise under the Command of Captain Robert John Pike, a distant descendant of Confederate General Albert Pike. During its full speed warp test, one of the warp pylons malfunctioned and would not maneuver into position which would have torn the nacelle and pylon from the secondary hull had the automatic emergency warp core shutdown sequence not been instantly activated. Captain Pike later ordered his engineering crews to permanently place the warp pylons into a fixed angled position as so not to have this happen to other Wanderer-class vessels. Captain Pike also incorporated a sensor module with a tomographic imaging scanner to enhance sensor resolution by nearly 65%; this later became slandered on most Wanderer-class vessels. By Stardate 2364.54, the USS Wanderer completed it's shakedown and began its 7-year mission into unexplored deep space past the Deneb system and construction was underway for the USS Shenandoah, USS Charleston, USS Hunley, and the USS Rappahannock.
In 2373, when several Wanderer-class was reconfigured as variant for subspace communications and intelligence gathering as well as refitted with more powerful phasers. The USS Rappahannock was the first starship to be outfitted with this type of modifcation and was placed under covert black ops missions near the Bajor sector. Generaly, her missions would only last about one to two week then report back to Deep Space 9 but as the Dominion began to build up it's forces in the Cardassian terototies Starfleet repositioned the Rappahannock near the Argos Array. This allowerd the Rappahannock to warn DS9 of the incomeing Dominion fleet that lead to the 8 month occupation of the station prior to the victory in Argolus and "Operation: Return". Eventully Wanderer-class ships where able to break Dominion encriptions and decode their communications which lead to a overwhelming victory at the second battles of Betazed, Chin'Taka and eventully Cardassia Prime in 2375.

I've heard this class be called several names, one of which being the Charleston Class. That aside, I presume that you meant the Enterprise-D ?
