This was taken a few days ago when I was imaging the Eagle Nebula

Pictured here is my NEQ6 Pro Goto Mount, a 10 inch (25cm) F/4 Newtonian Reflector Telescope, an Orion 80mm Shorttube Guidescope, and a Synguider Autoguider (bright glow at the back). My Canon EOS 1000D, which I use to capture the images is around the other side of the scope towards the front, along with its remote self timer so I don't jiggle the telescope when pressing the shutter button. The central bulge of our Milky Way galaxy is at the top of the frame. The glow of light polution is from a town in the far distance.

I had to go scope out why the guider had the red glow. Finally I understand!

That's a damn fine peice of tech.

I love how this shot looks like the scope is firing the Milky Way out of the barrel! Awesome shot Greg, another bloody masterpeice even as a "behind the scenes" shot!

Glad you like it mate Thanks for the feedback. Means a lot. So you looked up the specs on my Synguider eh?

I did indeed! Damn I'm starting to see why you have such an investment in your kit!

So your auto guider feeds info into your EQ6 then?

CapturingTheNight In reply to 12GSuper [2011-12-12 19:41:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes it feeds into the mount and controls it. No mater how good, stable and well setup your mount is when you get into focal lengths like i'm at, the mount will still need some help. Things like the worm gear finishing a cycle will cause the telescope to move fractionally and if this keeps happening without correction then the image will start to drift.

12GSuper In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-12-12 20:07:29 +0000 UTC]

So do you centre it on a nearby bright star?

Thats really fecking awesome. Shows how close in your scope allows if THAT causes drift over time! damn...

Yeah you try and lock it onto the brightest closest star to the object you are imaging.

How much does one of these things cost anyway?

I guess it's good that I'm living in Germany and we usually don't get a night as clear as that. Otherwise I would have to buy one of those things!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapturingTheNight In reply to DanielHeydecke [2011-07-31 10:03:40 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmmm...lets see....Mount + Telescope + Guidescope + Autoguider + Camera + Camera accessories (batteries, remote, etc) + Telescope accessories (eyepieces, focus masks, collimation tools, power supply, etc.) = about $4,500 Australian Dollars (1 Euro = about 1.3 Aus Dollars at the moment).

I love what I do, so the cost isn't important for me. It's well worth it to capture the beauty of space and share it with people.

lol! why is it every little gadget is always 100 dollars or more? "I really like that eyepiece (camera adapter, bracket, 10 meter USB cord, wedge, etc) "....... Man at store "oh those are 125 or 199 ...."
Let me know what you need and maybe I already have it. I go through phases where I buy a bunch of stuff. When Mars came close back in 2003(?) I thought I had to have every filter they made so I could get pics of the ice caps. I used them once or twice.

CapturingTheNight In reply to princevlad39 [2011-08-02 08:03:15 +0000 UTC]

lol. I know. They must think us astro people are made of money.

I'm definately going to get a webcam adapted for astrophotography soon, and I'm also considering a solar scope or if i'm poorer, a solar filter.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

princevlad39 In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-08-02 13:19:51 +0000 UTC]

I bought a webcam to use on the scope, but I have not used it yet. Do you know what software to use to capture an AVI video or something like that? At one time I had downloaded software and then my computer crashed. I have very little on this new laptop.

CapturingTheNight In reply to princevlad39 [2011-08-02 20:31:41 +0000 UTC]

I'll get back to you on that. After typing my previous comment, I took the plunge and sent an order in for one on Ebay i've had my eye on for a while. It comes already adapted for my telescope and with all the relevent drivers and astrophotography software i'll need.
Should be here within a week.

cool! is it the Philips SPC900NC? that is the one I have. Everyone says it is the best one to adapt to astro work. I have yet to make any mods to it.
I hope you will have a go at Saturn.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapturingTheNight In reply to princevlad39 [2011-08-03 20:16:45 +0000 UTC]

Technically, it is. They don't make that model anymore and they are very hard to get hold of, but the SPC880NC (The one I'm getting) has exactly the same circuitry and CCD chip, and it is apparently recognised by windows as the 900. It's just looks a bit different externally. It will come with a 1.25" adaptor already installed.
Another try at Saturn will certainly be the first thing I go for.

princevlad39 In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-08-03 21:26:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes it took a long time to find it. I'm ready to mod it now because my new laptop has built-in webcam. I read that when you remove the lens it usually cracks making it useless for a normal webcam.

DanielHeydecke In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-07-31 10:07:30 +0000 UTC]

It's defenitly one of the things I would love to try as well. But considering the fact that I'm already fighting with HDRI it will be a loooooong time until I reach that point...

Besides, I know only of two places in Germany where you can get a clear and clean night-sky without any artificial lights. One is in the Alps, the other is a military area.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapturingTheNight In reply to DanielHeydecke [2011-07-31 10:28:04 +0000 UTC]

I hope you can get your hands on an astrophotography setup and find a dark site, at some point Daniel. A good thing to start with, without spending heaps of money is to build a "barndoor tracker". I plan to write a tutorial on how to make one and use it soon, or if you google or youtube it you should find heaps of info on them.

DanielHeydecke In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-07-31 10:58:48 +0000 UTC]

To be honest: Although I would love to try something like that, it's pretty low on my priority-list. There are a lot of things who come first.
