Honestly I have no idea. I bought all these things in the past few years.

I recently got a box of coloured pencils: about $100.-
1 tortillion is $1.-
a mechanical pencil is $2.50-
Leads cost something like $5.-
sketchbook $20.-
regular pencil $2.-
kneaded eraser $3.50-

etc etc

At risk of sounding silly... Why is it bad to blend with your finger? Do the oils on your fingers ruin the picture over time, similar to why you should use acid free paper? That's something I've worried about. I've never really figured out how to use a blending stick well, and my finger was always easier. The Q-tip sounds like a great way to blend, I'll definitely be trying that. This tutorial was really helpful to me. I've only done a little drawing and this gave me some great ideas. I'll try not to use my finger for blending anymore.

yup that's the exact reason why you should use fingers as blending they leave smudges and stains, which make the drawing look like crap

ok, thanks! I'll definitely not be using my finger from now on.

somewhere between 15 and 40 hours, lol
it's worth every single minute! I'm always like when a drawing is done because I just love to work on something like a portrait

do you apply some kind of sealant or fixative to your drawings?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cataclysm-X In reply to Maksn [2009-02-06 14:32:54 +0000 UTC]

I do have fixative, but I'm kind of afraid to use it.
I guess I should give it a shot, right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Maksn In reply to Cataclysm-X [2009-02-07 08:07:01 +0000 UTC]

yup, just be sure to do a test run before using it on on serious pics. >_>;; it darkens and smudges pictures if you arent careful.

Cataclysm-X In reply to gdpr-6007411 [2009-02-06 14:33:46 +0000 UTC]

A-Freaking fantastic! Love your work! I use to do realistic drawings, but the cash flow died down and now i'm back to old basic materials. So you use A4 paper, is it a strong kind of paper that is rough?

Anyways, i might go at it again due to flops on photoshop. Thanks for the tutorial!

I'm curious, what do you use to protect your art from not smudging and ruining the final piece?

Is fixative enough or do you need anything in particular?

This 'equipment/materials' tutorial has made my day.

I've recently been re-inspired to draw again so I decided to do a picture BEFORE I'd discovered this tutorial and really struggled to get any sense of depth into it due to the fact that I only had very basic materials. This depressed me. (I only had a Hb and 2b and a basic eraser and nothing else). I'm sure you would say that that could still achieve good results but 'good' needs to be 'great'.

Your tip on using mechanical pencils, hard pencils for lighter stuff and blending sticks, along with all the other materials you use, has been a life saver. It's opened up a whole new world to me and along with your fantastic tutorials on the actual aspects of shading, drawing hair, eyes, mouths etc, I can now seen a light at the end of the tunnel. I realise it will take much practice and hard work to improve but I feel I have a fighting chance now.

Thank you so much.

Cataclysm-X In reply to Aralx [2008-10-01 12:09:23 +0000 UTC]

hmm I guess you never used one? Using a mirror is a way to see if the proportions of a drawing look okay. If you take one of my older works for instance and mirror it, you'll see many anatomical mistakes

*Raises hand nervously* This is awesome... may I ask a question? Why is it bad to blend with a finger? I know it's not the best way to do it. I need to get my hands on a blending stick of some kind, LOL.
