Description ...::EDIT::...
Larger and edited file on request.
Several people were complaining about the small font. Leaving critiques and comments are more than welcome, but I just don't like it when people use my tutorials and at the same time nitpick about the smallest things and don't even leave a "thank you" note.

So for those who do appreciate the 30 hours I spent in writing and drawing this tutorial: I uploaded a larger file. You can click download for full size.

...Whoa...

This is a MASSIVE tutorial I did in only 2 freakin' days! LOL.

I said I would do a gift for you all because someone hit the 60.000 pageviews. Besides, I got over 1550 watchers and my drawings of Vincent and House got over 1000 favourites.

Ooohh look at the pretty colors. My previous tutorials look quite boring compared to this baby.

Ehm... what else to say...
Have fun!

...EDIT...
Tortillions cannot be reused except for smudged areas.

However, blendingsticks can be used more often if you sharpen them with a pencil sharpener or sandpaper!!

It's easy: you first draw a circle, and than everything else magically appears on paper. Piece of cheesecake!

Good luck!

I love this tuturial^^ It is really helpfull

I found out that you can shapen you papersticks with a knife
and a secound method I figured out in school was that you can blend areas when you are get a sanpaper ( in my case a nail file) and rub your pencil (2h for light and 2B for dark) then get a brush and draw with this the powder...

Tortillions can be used more often by sanding down the end(s) gently with sand paper. If you get thicker tortillions, this works better (and you can still make them nice and pointy, so you don't have to sacrifice detail blending )

i only have one stupid question .. how do i get that very dark black shades ..
i use canson papers .. and when i shade some area i get gray color .. black and tiny white areas ..
i wonder how do i get that perfect black .. i tried so hard .. even using 8B pencils .. but always gray ..
do u use photoshop after scanning to refine the blackness of those areas ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

ErnestoVladimir In reply to Perfixel [2010-10-17 17:30:52 +0000 UTC]

I kind of found how to do this, see there's something odd about the B+ pencils and the H+ pencils, if you only use B+ regular pencils, there is bound to be white graininess, but if you first blend with an HB and then go over it with something like a 4B(you don't really need to go much higher) it will be perfectly black, and you don't have to always blend to the very end, the last layer can be left unblended to achieve the darkness.

Cataclysm-X In reply to Perfixel [2010-10-17 17:22:41 +0000 UTC]

there's no such thing as stupid questions

it really depends on what kind of paper you use sometimes. The paper I use, HahnemΓΌhle Nostalgie sketchbook paper, catches dark pencillines perfectly fine, even when I use regular 2B pencils! Very thin paper such as copy/printing paper wrinkle easily and don't really show the blackness of soft (B) pencils. Canson is a great brand, but perhaps you got the wrong kind of structure and thickness. Make sure to get heavy paper. The thicker, the better

and i've used photshop to refine the blackness of those area that i shaded hardly .. to get this : [link]

Thank you for the tutorial! I am recently drawing an anime picture using ref from this wonderful artisterpep.deviantart.com/ and I was using your tutorial to get better at shading. The tissues are really helpful with shading and circular mothion evens the tone out pretty good. Again, thanks for the tutorial. I'm sorry that some people don't appreciate the work you put in this and all your other ones.

Awesome tutorial. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not sure if i've got blending sticks or tortillions but I use a nail file to scrape off the dirty parts so I can re-use them again and again Actually now I think about it I think mine are called stumps or something like that. So probably not helpful at all :s

I don't sharp tortillons with a pencil sharpener... I just can't make it right...I use a metal nail file that I found in here, cause I'm to lazy to go buy some sand paper...he,he... And I don't do it,cause the 'sandpaper' result is way better, but some people just erase it...
