Description If this is in the wong category, please let me know XD

Okay, so, I've promised this thing to a lot of people at a lot of different times. And I've put it off, and put it off... and finally I was prodded enough to freaking do it! So here it is! My very own tutorial on how I draw hands. I tried to keep it simple while covering all the bases I could... and in doing so, pointing out and clearing up common mistakes I've come across.

I hope it helps! Feel free to download and share around as much as possible... credit to me is always welcome And as it says, if there's any questions you have, or something I didn't cover that you'd like to have cleared up, I will do my best to answer those for you!

If you fave this, thank you! I can't take the time to thank everyone one at a time, but I really appreciate it, and I hope it comes in... handy

This was a lovely tutorial. Β I followed along drawing everything that you drew. Β Thanks! Β What about more dynamic positions of hands? Β Any tips?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ccRask In reply to Ayohna [2013-08-31 23:40:27 +0000 UTC]

Just keep the basics in mind. Β Remember to make the wedge first, then the mitten, and then break the fingers apart from there. Β If the fingers are drastically differently posed/stretched out, draw them as lines and circles where the knuckles are, or as overlapping ovals. Β Just remember the palm is a box, and to break everything into simple shapes and plot them out before you add detail. Β That goes for drawing in general, but especially hands where people tend to be so desperate for accuracy that they get caught up in the details and forget to sketch the whole thing out first.

Spomyjiny In reply to ??? [2013-07-03 20:37:40 +0000 UTC]

This is actually helpful, thanks!
But.... Is there a tip in trying to properly draw the hands proportionally? I'm still having trouble drawing the fingers in correct lengths proportional to the palm of the hand, either one or a couple of my drawn fingers end up being too short, too long, or just fatter than the others.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ccRask In reply to Spomyjiny [2013-07-05 07:21:14 +0000 UTC]

Great question!

First of all, the fingers are as long as the palm itself. As for the fingers being in proportion to each other, this is easier to do if you take my suggestion here with starting with a "mitt" or a box and then sub-dividing the space evenly. (This takes a lot of 'eyeballing' which becomes easier with time, but in the meantime there's no shame in doing some quick measuring with your fingers to make sure that each space is even.)

Also note that on each finger, the distance from the first knuckle to the middle knuckle, and the middle knuckle to the end of the finger, is the same.

Just don't forget that the fingers are different lengths, as I outlined in this tutorial. Draw from life or a reference and sooner or later you will come up with a way to explain the fingers to yourself... but always remember the box/wedge, that's the place to start!
