Description
Here it is, as promised.Yes, I have a tablet. Yes, this should work with any version of Photoshop even though I used 7. Yes, I did it totally on the computer, but you can scan a sketch/ink and apply the same methods.
I think that covers everything...but probably not.

Wooow, extremely helpful! It's always nice to know how other people do things. This has to be the seventh different method I've seen ^___^ but it seems very, very cool! Thanks for the tutorial. I was a little curious about the eyes, but you might wanna keep that as an artists secret or something

Nice tutorial. I love your art and coloring, and getting to see a glimpse into your methods was very enlightening. One of my favorite aspects to it is you encouraging people not to be half-assed, and do it good. I always hate seeing those white gaps between lines and color. Another important thing you touched on is remembering the form and texture of the shape you are coloring, so as not to make flat, boring color shapes.
If I may be allowed to offer a suggestion, I notice that you use the brush tool to ink, and that when you use the magic wand tool, you leave the "Anti-Aliased" Box checked. This is the reason why the little white gaps appear when you fill the color (I'm not telling you, but as extra info to the people who might be reading this) When I do the "flats" I generally use the pencil tool and leave the "Aliasing" (un-check the anti-alias box for the selection tools) This leaves a pixelated edge, the "Jaggies." When using the magic wand tool, it will go straight to the line edge, lining up with all the jaggies and avoiding those gaps. (Anti-Aliasing makes a softer looking line by adding tones from the selected color to transparent, which can "confuse" the magic wand tool. You could also avoid it by adjusting the tolerance of the magic wand tool, but that is generally less predictable) After that, their are many ways to get the softness back in the line art, one easy way is to hit it with a Gaussian Blur.
As you said, there is no single right way to do anything in Photoshop, you can do the same trick 500 different ways, none of them being right or wrong. It all comes down to experiment and preference, I hope you don't mind me putting in my two cents, because what I said is definately not "THE WAY" to do it, just "another way" And thank you SOOOO much for sharing your way! I can see why your works come out so beautiful and complete looking!

This was excellently executed. You were very thorough and managed to keep it simplistic without making it too simplistic. Um, not sure what I mean. Anyways, I think I'll give cel-shading a try sometime. Thanks for the tutorial!

A neat little tutorial. I hope you don't mind, but I'm gonna sugest a few things....
in step 5, once you've painted dark and locked the transparency, rather then using the bucket tool, you can use the shortcut for fill all, alt+backspace, and fill all the darkened sections with white. A quick timesaver, but it's always nice to have those :3
in step 7, there is an alternative method, if your computer is powerful enough to handle lot's of layers. Rather then shading on the same layer as the base colour, you can create a layer above this one and then use the keyboard shortcut for group, cntrl+G. This means that on this layer, you can only add colour where it is not transparent in the layer underneath. By having your shading layer(s) and highlight layer not the same as the base colour, you can use the shade/highlight colour only, rtaher then using the shade and base colour to get the shadow looking right. It all comes down to preference, as it doesn't make too much of a difference, but it does have the advantage that if after shading you want to change the colour slightly, since it's on another layer, you can lock the shading layer and then fill with the new colour :3
in step 8, you can use the grouping trick to add colours over the lineart, but still keep the lineart layer black. You could even have different layers above the lineart grouped for each colour you want to colour the lineart.:3
Anyway, it's a great tutorial you've done there, I just thought I'd share those tips in case you were interested. I have a lot os respect for anyone who decides to share how they do their art in tutorials like this.
Grouping layers is something I do all the time, so I like to share it around XD
