Description
Tutorial showing 4 ways of preparing a digital line-art for colouring.WARNING: large file. It might take a while before the tutorial shows up on your screen, so please, be patient.
ARTIST'S COMMENTS
I am sure this is very obvious to most people out there, but many still seem to get their paint buckets, magic wands or erasers out when colouring line-arts! This tutorial shows the process of making any line-art appear on a transparent layer, which will allow you to add colour without ruining the lines.
The steps shown were all done in Photoshop CS2, but I'm sure at least one of the techniques will work in other programs such as GIMP or Painter as long as you make a few changes. Please feel free to ask if you have any queries about any of the techniques or steps.

Yes, I believe *Sassykatt1 commented on this Jan 19th saying she had tried all the methods in GIMP and commented on their compatibility there. You can check below in the comments to see for yourself

What does mask ? And will you do tut for black horse ?

Masking is the hardest one of the techniques above, so I would suggest sticking to one of the simpler methods if you aren't used to it I will hopefully be making a tutorial for that one yeah

I'm glad if my tutorial could help you *Sassykatt1 has tried all the 4 methods in GIMP and said that the first method works the best, so I'd suggest using that one

Your my savior! I had been desperately searching dA for good transparencies to use and finding myself oogling all the nice ones...with white backgrounds -.-
I attempted to just colour one like that, but it covered the lines. So I tried turning the opacity down on the brushes, and though I could colour it, it still hurt the lines.
Thanks so much for this tut.
To repay you, I tried out all 4 ways on GIMP.
Only the first way can be done on GIMP.
2. Gimp doesn't have Edit > Define Brush Present. I tried other ways but that option just isn't do-able.
3. We do not have the little dotted circle at the bottom, at least that I could find. I've never used the channels though.
4. Gimp doesnt have the Image > Apply Image option. So yea, that wont work - at least from my attempt at it.
I hope my feedback helps! Don't let it get you down fellow GIMPers T^T at least we can do the first (and easiest) option (In my opinion).
PS: I've had Gimp for almost a year and am constantly learning how to use it and new tricks just from working with it.

Oh wow, I'm glad my tutorial could help you And thank you so very much for trying them out in GIMP too!
I've had so many people asking me if it's possible to do these in GIMP and I haven't been able to tell them if it is or not.

THANK YOU! I have been looking everywhere for something like this, but every tutorial said to go to the 'channels tab'. I have Photoshop Elements 8 and there is no channels tab, so that made it a bit difficult
You've really helped me out, thanks a lot
