Description
Tutorial showing 4 ways of preparing a digital line-art for colouring.WARNING: large file. It might take a while before the tutorial shows up on your screen, so please, be patient.
ARTIST'S COMMENTS
I am sure this is very obvious to most people out there, but many still seem to get their paint buckets, magic wands or erasers out when colouring line-arts! This tutorial shows the process of making any line-art appear on a transparent layer, which will allow you to add colour without ruining the lines.
The steps shown were all done in Photoshop CS2, but I'm sure at least one of the techniques will work in other programs such as GIMP or Painter as long as you make a few changes. Please feel free to ask if you have any queries about any of the techniques or steps.

this is very helpful, thankyou for making it!
i just have one question - when you fill in the base color of the lineart, do you just use something like the paint bucket tool?
thanks!

Thank you, I'm glad you found it useful Could you specify the question a bit, I'm not sure what exactly you mean.

I always used the brush thing - but never thought of the others before
maybe I would have thought of the multiply version sometime but the mask thing is just genius!

I only really knew about the two first aswell, although I had heard of both the channeling and masking techniques before. So I thought I'd do a bit more research into them, and it turns out they are in fact quite simple to do, at least the channeling one

I generally never use line-arts apart from my own, and those I delete almost immediately after I've started colouring But since I've put some of them up here for others to download, I figured it would be nice to show how you can use them once you've downloaded them

Very interesting techniques, none of which I've used but I especially like the brush idea. To add colour the line-art I've always just locked the transparent pixels on the layer and coloured away.
I think I shall try one of these in my next picture.
Awesome tutorial Cerona!

I'm glad you found them interesting They are aimed at those who use and download free line-arts mainly, because most of the line-arts on DA are JPEG files, meaning the white background and the line-art are all merged onto one single layer. It can be very tricky to colour them (many people try to erase the whites and leave the lines, use the magic wand to select certain areas, or just fill the white with paint, which leaves horrible marks and is very hard to edit later on) unless you know one or two of these techniques. Of course, if it's your own line-art, then of course you make it straight away on a transparent layer so you can colour underneath, or if it's a PNG, the lines are usually also on a separate layer. But for those who haven't got that, I thought it could be nice to show a few methods of getting around the problem

Oh wow, really? It's the most well-known out of the whole bunch, and definitely the easiest one too You should give it a try sometime

XD Yeah figures I would be the one to do the longer methods and just totally miss the easy one. I did the method yesterday! It was awesome so thank you!!

Haha, that always seems to be the case XD But I'm glad if the other technique worked well for you!

Glad you think so! I don't know if it's of help or use to anyone, but since I've got line-arts to download in my gallery, I thought I'd put up a little explanation of how to make the most out of them

Cool, I hope it works alright! I'm always a bit nervous about explaining how to do something, even if it's something simple, because there are so many things that might seem obvious to me but confusing to other people

AonikaArt [2010-10-01 18:15:51 +0000 UTC]
oh, I have never used this method with channels or masking! It looks kinda complicated, but your explanations are just perfect! I'll have to try these two methods now
π: 0 β©: 1
cerona In reply to AonikaArt [2010-10-02 11:37:30 +0000 UTC]
I don't work with line-arts a lot, so I haven't actually used them myself either They are a bit more complicated than the first two techniques, but shouldn't be too hard to follow (unless I made the explanation confusing, which I'm always afraid of
).

cool tutorial, you should make one for your epic shading too

cerona In reply to aninsvet [2010-10-02 11:39:17 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Yeah I will, I'm starting from the basics so to speak I'm gonna prepare a few line-arts first (so that people can use them if they don't have their own to draw from), then I made this tutorial of how to prepare your line-art for colouring, and now I'll make the actual tutorial of how to colour, shade, highlight and add details to your picture
After that I will still make another for the black horses, since I colour them a bit differently

Wow, can't wait, you're trully an amazing artist, would be my honor to try to draw like u I just love black horses, more than white ones....actually i love all horses. lol. Did u know that black foals can grow into white adults?

I'll try and do my best in explaining the steps later! I'm just so afraid I'll mess something up or explain wrongly - so many people have told me they want a colouring tutorial, so now the pressure is really on to not disappoint them all I did know actually, so cool how they can completely change colour during their whole life, and still keep fading to white when they are adults

Thank you so much for explaining this, and your steps are easy to follow. So far in my photoshop class we've been learning about channels and the many different ways to select things. It's always great to apply them to artwork as well.

cerona In reply to Celleno [2010-10-02 11:44:28 +0000 UTC]
No problem! I don't know if people will find it useful or not, but seeing as I've got a few line-arts where the lines are merged with the white background, I thought it could be nice to have a tutorial showing how to use them properly and not just grab the paintbucket straight away
