Description Tutorial showing 4 ways of preparing a digital line-art for colouring.

ARTIST'S COMMENTS

I am sure this is very obvious to most people out there, but many still seem to get their paint buckets, magic wands or erasers out when colouring line-arts! This tutorial shows the process of making any line-art appear on a transparent layer, which will allow you to add colour without ruining the lines.

The steps shown were all done in Photoshop CS2, but I'm sure at least one of the techniques will work in other programs such as GIMP or Painter as long as you make a few changes. Please feel free to ask if you have any queries about any of the techniques or steps.

Haha yeah, there's quite a few different ways to do it Of course, the result is the same for them all, but it's always good to know several different ways of doing something I tried to arrange them in order of difficulty - Multiply is definitely the easiest (and most well-known too), while Masking and Channeling are a bit more advanced.

eheh yea, i noticed the arranging was in order of difficulty, i couldn't understand a word of the last two but i'm sure i'll get them one day, since i haven't been using photoshop that long it's excusable

Yeah, they do get a bit confusing But with several options to choose from, I'm hoping everyone will find a technique that suits them

Personally, I hardly work with layers, so I only knew about the first way, haha. XD Most of the tutorials I've seen are rather... complicated to understand, but yours is much easier to work with... might just try out the other methods sometime.

I don't generally work with line-arts much either, or if I do, I just delete them at the end any way But I know a lot of people that like to use them, so I thought I'd make a little tutorial for fun, especially since I've got line-arts to download in my gallery aswell
