super tutorial as always! my problem is when it comes to baking.. I ALWAYS burn 'em no matter what temperature (my oven is very stupid as it doesn't say what degree its on)

Oh, is that liquid FIMO in the pics? I just got some - was wondering which you recommend.

Yup, for this I like Fimo better. Fimo is much more transparent but Sculpey is my liquid of choice for faux frostings.

For Christmas my parents want to know what to get me... I was wondering what liquid/translucent clay you recomend? (And, I am very sorry, what does TLS stand for? I remember seeing somewhere, and now I have forgoten!)

TLS Stands for Translucent Liquid Sculpey. It is just an abbreviation commonly used for translucent liquid clay.
Although TLS is the most commonly used term other brand of clay have a liquid variation as well. I compare the three main brand here in my polymer clay article: [link]

Ah, okay, good to know. I was pleased with the transparency of my TLS on my pancakes! I'll try fimo.

I recently tried doing this myself ([link] ) and it's almost exactly the same! I will try the clay blending next time; this time I dusted on some chalk.
Great tut and great method!

That's a really neat technique for the syrup! I suppose for those of us don't have transparent clay, that glaze should also work.
I have a question about polymer clay though.. For a short time, when I started using it, I baked it in the same toaster oven I use for food. Then I read that the clay can be toxic, and worse when it's overbaked. So I'm sitting here with lots of clay and ideas, but it's too expensive to just buy another toaster oven. What are your thoughts on this?

chat-noir In reply to shatteredplastic [2008-07-21 22:10:40 +0000 UTC]
Well if you over bake your clay to the point of it turning black and bubbling you might have a problem. But slightly burnt edges is no problem.
The only thing is if you use your toaster oven's baking tray for baking clay and food I suggest buying a new one of those. So that way you will have one tray for clay only.
Other than that I think you're just fine. I bake my clay in a normal kitchen style oven and I wouldn't have to buy 2 ovens (one for clay one for food) so I don't think you would have to invest in two toaster ovens.
