Yes, why?
Nephrite presumes that the black crystal reacts on love, but why? Wasn't it summoned to find the silver crystal? And why does it only work "properly" after Beryl altered it ...somehow? And why hasn't she done that before? And w- okay, I know you can ask tons of questions like that about Sailor Moon, and the ultimate answer is always "because script says so".
Perhaps it reacts on love because the silver crystal is also something based on love and joy and goodness ...? But then, anime-silver crystal is splitted in seven parts, every piece in the heart of a former demon. Where is the love-connection here? Gosh, I think I should just stop to speculate here. Perhaps the crystal was simply a romantic and wanted to play magic matchmaker with Nephrite and Naru.
Despite everything written above, since I watched season 1 of Sailor Moon for the first time around 1997 (GAAAH!), the four generals became one of my bullet proof weaknesses. None of the following SM villains could quite reach up to their charme for me.
Nephrite takes my first place amongst the four guys. And his relationship with Naru ... it's dysfunctional, silly, stupid, kinky, dangerous - but eventually very touching and endearing as well. What a mixture!
The fandom for the villains of the first season is imho not very big, despite Sailor Moon's huge popularity in general. I was surprised and delighted to see that a talented professional artist like Tata (slime, slime) has a big heart for the four boys and their queen and draws continually gorgeous fanart. This contest entry is a little tribute to the fan joy she gave me and others by showing her pictures here.

Yeah, even though Zoisite was responsible for Nephrite's death, I couldn't help but feel a bit for he- him, too.

Yeah exactly! And Zoisite was a very interesting character - more loyal towards Kunzite than "his queen" Beryl. Of course, Nephrite turned out pretty interesting too, falling in love with a small girl... Ahhh, memories!

Yes, motives of that black crystal is very misterious )))) it makes me think that any magic is the mirror of magician's heart... Its allways great to see new fanart about them, especially so interesting and cute ** Thank you very much for entry

Hehe, the wonderfully cheeky humor of SMA was definitely an inspiration. I remember Nephrite wailing "Not her again" when the black crystal shows him Naru. Buuut I don't think the crystal ever sang in one of the SMA episodes.

I liked Nephrite and Naru a lot as well^^ And you drew him great here (Any why didn't Beryl act sooner? Because she likes to punish her generals... *shot*)

Beryll should have taken courses about how to run an (evil...) organisation with more efficiency and less temper tantrums. Well, too late!

Well, yeah, temper tantrums never help when you actually have to keep something going smooth xd
